Today is World Environment Day 🌍

At GJ Travel, sustainability is not a one-day focus. It is part of how we operate every day and has been part of our heritage since the company was founded in 1931. Today, that commitment is carried forward by our staff, guides, drivers, and partners across Iceland.

World Environment Day reminds us that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility. As a tourism company, we know that the landscapes, communities, and natural resources we depend on today must also be there for future generations.

From our modern EURO 6 fleet and ongoing investment in safety and efficiency, to supporting local communities and developing regenerative travel experiences, we are continuously working to reduce our footprint while creating meaningful journeys across Iceland. One of our largest ongoing investments is the continuous renewal of our coach fleet. Keeping our vehicles modern and efficient is a long-term commitment, and today the average age of our fleet is under three years.

This year, we are proud to join the global World Environment Day movement by highlighting our commitment to responsible and regenerative tourism.

We are also proud to be the new GPN partner for Iceland, connecting our destination with a global network of trusted transport and travel professionals who share a commitment to responsible travel and high service standards.

Coach travel remains one of the most efficient ways to move groups, helping reduce traffic congestion, lower emissions, and make better use of resources 🚍

The image below, shared by the Global Passenger Network, illustrates how coach travel compares with other modes of transport in terms of greenhouse gas emissions per passenger kilometer.

☀️ What time is sunset in Iceland?

In summer, that's not always an easy question to answer.

The sun barely dips below the horizon, painting the landscape in golden light late into the night. Waterfalls glow, mountains cast long shadows, and evening can feel a lot like afternoon.

It is one of those Icelandic experiences that photos never quite capture. You simply have to be there.

📍 Midnight Sun season has arrived.

Winter ❄️

Somewhere beneath the Icelandic night sky, a guide points quietly toward the Northern Lights.

The group falls silent.

For generations, people in Iceland looked at the moving lights above and created stories around them. Some believed the glowing skies were connected to the gods, while others saw them as signs, messages, or part of the mysteries of the night sky itself.

Today, these stories are still shared beneath the lights, surrounded by Iceland’s dark landscapes and winter silence.

These are the Icelandic moments people remember and the stories they bring home with them.

We at GJ Travel are extremely proud to have been recognized as a Model Firm 2026 in VR’s annual “Company of the Year” survey. The company is among the 15 medium-sized companies in Iceland to receive this recognition this year.

The survey is conducted VR , Iceland’s largest trade union, and is based on employee evaluations of factors such as workplace culture, management, job satisfaction, equality, salary terms, and working environment. The results reflect a strong company culture and a long-term focus on building a positive and professional workplace.

Founded in 1931, GJ Travel remains family-owned and operated by the third generation. Throughout the years, the company has placed strong emphasis on professionalism, safety, teamwork, and continuous staff training, alongside responsible operations and sustainability.

“This recognition is an important confirmation of the workplace environment we have built together. Our people are at the heart of the company’s daily operations and are the reason GJ Travel continues to operate and develop,” says Stefán Gunnarsson, CEO of GJ Travel.

In recent years, GJ Travel has received several recognitions for its operations and workplace culture, including being named a Model Company 2025 and receiving the Icelandic Encouragement Award for Responsible Tourism 2025 for its commitment to responsible tourism and sustainable operations.

GJ Travel would like to thank its staff for their trust, professionalism, and contribution to building the company over nearly a century of operations.
