How and Where to Refuel in Iceland (+ Free Map)
Thinking of renting a camper or 4×4 in Iceland?
Here’s something most guides don’t tell you: fueling up can be tricky if you’re not prepared.
Let’s break it down.
⛽️ What You Need to Know About Fuel in Iceland
🔹 Most common fuels:
Diesel – used by most campers and 4×4s
Gasoline (Bensín) – for smaller cars
🔹 Fuel is expensive (approx. €2.10–2.50/liter), but most stations offer self-service 24/7.
🔹 Card payments only at many stations — your card must support chip & PIN and sometimes international purchases.
🔹 Prepaid cards are available at stations like N1 if your card doesn’t work.
