Iceland's Highlands are opening for the summer, and you don't need a car to get there. Many travellers pass up the chance to visit the extraordinary landscapes of the Highland region in favour of more easily accessible parts of the country. Yet that’s a pity: the scenery will rightly make a lasting impression.

Our Highland Bus connects Reykjavík to some of Iceland's most remote and spectacular landscapes.

📍 Landmannalaugar (~4.5 hrs from Reykjavík)
Rainbow rhyolite mountains, natural geothermal hot springs, and sweeping lava fields. The starting point of the famous Laugavegur Trail. Best for colourful landscapes and a wilder, more remote feel.

📍Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) (~4–5 hrs from Reykjavík)
A lush green oasis tucked between glaciers. Gorgeous canyon hikes, stunning glacier views, and the finishing point of the Laugavegur Trail. Best for accessible trails and that fairytale forest atmosphere.

Both are reachable by Highland Bus from Reykjavík — no 4x4 needed!
Running from June to August, you can even combine both ends for the full Laugavegur Trail experience.

Most visitors to Iceland follow the same route. The Golden Circle. The South Coast. The Blue Lagoon. All extraordinary, and all very well attended. Þjórsárdalur Valley is what Iceland looks like when the crowds thin out.
Two hours from Reykjavík, the valley runs along the longest river in the country, cutting through volcanic rock that has been shaped over two million years.

📍 At the northern end, Háifoss drops 122 metres into a canyon so deep it generates its own mist. Right beside it, Granni, "the Neighbour Falls", flows alongside, creating one of Iceland's most dramatic natural pairings. If the canyon looks familiar, it's one of the filming locations for the Stranger Things Season 5 finale.

📍 Further down the valley, Hjálparfoss is a double waterfall that pours directly through a lava field, framed by basalt columns. It's one of those places that genuinely stops you mid-sentence.

📍 And at Þjóðveldisbærinn, a reconstructed Viking-era Commonwealth Farm stands on the site of a settlement that was buried by a Hekla eruption in 1104. Walking through it, you're standing on the same ground as Iceland's earliest settlers.

Three stops. One valley. One guided day from Reykjavík.
