The little black church at Búðir, Búðakirkja, is a small 19th-century wooden church on the south side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, standing alone in the Búðahraun lava field with views toward Snæfellsjökull and the sea. The parish was first established in 1703, but the current church dates from 1848 and is still in use today for services, weddings, concerts, and local events.
Its distinctive black color comes from the traditional pitch-tar coating used to protect the timber from harsh Icelandic weather, with white doors and windows providing a sharp contrast against the dark lava and often dramatic sky.
