Field Notes | Northbound Approach
Lat 70-something. Definitely in the Arctic. Visibility good.
From the aircraft window, the coastline began to take shape.
Harsh. White. Serrated.
The Arctic doesn’t introduce itself.
It appears, slowly. In pieces.
Icebergs were first.
Pale markings on the sea. Then mass. Then movement.
We adjusted course to slip between them.
Midday: a solitary bear, resting on a ridge of blue ice.
Later, the same bear — or maybe a different one — entered the water.
It moved with the kind of grace you don’t expect from something so large.
Not a splash.
There are no fences here. No certainty.
Only proximity, if you’ve earned it.
Only moments, if you’re paying attention.
This is The Great Expedition Company.
Twelve guests. One vessel.
The 2025 expedition season begins this July.
To the edge of the map, and slightly beyond.
