Today, Fisherman's Day, we celebrate all sailors in Iceland 🐟⚓

Every year on the first Sunday of June, Iceland celebrates Sjómannadagurinn, or Fishermen's Day.

For centuries, fishing has been one of the foundations of Icelandic society and economy. Coastal communities across the country mark the occasion with family events, harbor celebrations, entertainment, and activities honoring the people who have made their living at sea.

It's a reminder of the deep connection between Iceland and the North Atlantic Ocean that surrounds it.

If you're visiting Iceland today, keep an eye out for local celebrations in fishing towns around the country. 💙

What’s on in Iceland this June? 🇮🇸✨

June marks the true start of summer in Iceland and also one of the best times to visit.

WHY IS JUNE SO SPECIAL ☀
June brings near-endless daylight, giving you up to 20–21 hours of light to explore waterfalls, glaciers, black sand beaches, and remote towns without rushing. Roads are more accessible than in winter, wildlife is active, and the whole country feels like it’s coming alive. You’ll also find local festivals happening almost every week — each one celebrating Icelandic culture, food, and history in its own way.

WEATHER 🌦️
Expect the classic Iceland mix: sun, wind, and rain (sometimes in the same hour). Temperatures usually sit around 7–13°C (44–55°F). But the trade-off? That magical endless daylight 😎

EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS 🎉
📅 7th — Fisherman’s Day
📅 16th–21st — Viking Festival in Hafnarfjörður
📅 17th — Icelandic National Day
📅 19th–21st — Summer Solstice Festival in Grímsey
📅 21st — Summer Solstice ☀️
📅 24th — Jónsmessa
📅 26th–28th — Lobster Festival in Höfn

5 days in Iceland in May? This is how to make the most of it.👇

This 5-day journey takes you around Iceland, combining the highlights with lesser-known stops — all at the perfect time of year, when days are long, roads are open, and wildlife is returning.

Day 1 – North Iceland
Step into Iceland’s past at Glaumbær Turf Houses, explore the vibrant town of Akureyri, and unwind at the Forest Lagoon surrounded by nature.

Day 3 – East Fjords
Drive through one of Iceland’s most underrated regions — the East Fjords — with quiet fishing villages like Reyðarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, and Djúpivogur, ending the day in Höfn.

Day 4 – South Coast
A day of iconic landscapes: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach, the black sands of Reynisfjara, puffin cliffs at Dyrhólaey, and waterfalls like Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.

Day 5 – Golden Circle +
Walk between continents at Þingvellir, watch Strokkur erupt at Geysir, see the power of Gullfoss, and relax in the Blue Lagoon before heading back to Reykjavík.

Today we celebrate May 1st in Iceland 🇮🇸 👩🏽‍🏭👷🏻

What happens in Iceland on May 1st?

Labour Day (Verkalýðsdagurinn) is both International Workers’ Day and a public holiday in Iceland. It has been observed since the early 20th century and is closely tied to the country’s labor movement and workers’ rights.

Across Reykjavík and other towns, the day is marked by organized parades and gatherings, where unions and communities come together to highlight social issues, working conditions, and solidarity. The largest events usually take place in central Reykjavík, often starting at Hlemmur and moving toward Ingólfstorg.

For travelers, it offers a different glimpse into Icelandic society — not a tourist event, but a real celebration where locals come together in the city.

📍 Reykjavík city center
🕒 Public holiday — some shops and services may be closed or have limited hours

If you’re visiting Iceland on May 1st, it’s worth taking a walk through the city to experience this part of local culture.

Save this for your Iceland trip.

Only have 3 days in Iceland in May? This route works perfectly this time of year.👇

Start close to Reykjavík with the Golden Circle, where you can walk between continents at Þingvellir, see Strokkur erupt at the Geysir geothermal area, and experience the power of Gullfoss waterfall.

The next day, head along the South Coast, passing waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss before reaching the black sand beaches near Vík. In May, the landscapes begin to turn greener, and puffins can often be spotted along coastal cliffs like Dyrhólaey.

On your third day, continue further along the South Coast to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs drift toward the ocean and wash up on nearby Diamond Beach. Then make your way back to Reykjavík, revisiting the South Coast in a completely different light.

May is an ideal time for this kind of trip — with long daylight hours (up to 20 hours), accessible roads, and fewer crowds than peak summer, giving you flexibility to explore more along the way.

Are you visiting Iceland in May? 🌿✨

May is one of the most vibrant times to visit Iceland — longer days, blooming landscapes, and a calendar filled with cultural events and local traditions.

🇮🇸 May 1st (Labour Day) is a public holiday across the country, marked by parades and celebrations, especially in Reykjavík.
🎨 In early May, DesignMarch transforms Reykjavík into a hub of creativity, showcasing Icelandic design, innovation, and architecture.
💛 Mother’s Day (second Sunday of May) is a quieter moment, where locals celebrate with flowers, family time, and cozy gatherings.
🎬 In the Westfjords, the Skjaldborg Documentary Film Festival brings storytelling to life in the small town of Patreksfjörður.
🎭 Towards the end of the month, the Reykjavík Arts Festival begins, offering a diverse program of music, theatre, dance, and visual arts across the city.

🌼 With nature fully awakening and events happening across the country, May blends culture, scenery, and longer daylight into one unforgettable travel window.
