Deep in Iceland’s interior lies a network of remote rivers, streams and small creeks that we simply call the Northern Highlands.

This isn’t one river or one beat. It’s a vast wilderness fishery where exploring is a big part of the experience. Reaching some of the best water requires driving rough Highland tracks and then continuing on foot, if you really want to experience the Northern Highlands, hiking is part of the deal.

The waters hold wild brown trout and Arctic char, often in surprisingly small streams and creeks. The season runs from June through September, with the fishing generally improving as the summer progresses. Later in the season, increasing numbers of trout and char move out of the large glacial river and into the smaller clear-water tributaries.

Much of the appeal is simply not knowing what you'll find around the next corner. Small streams, clear water and lightly fished wild trout make sight-fishing with dry flies and nymphs particularly exciting.

The Northern Highlands can occasionally be explored on guided day trips from Long Valley Lodge, but for the most part this is a DIY fishery, and one for anglers who are prepared to put in some miles.

Deep in the Icelandic Highlands, Kaldakvísl offers wild brown trout and Arctic char fishing in one of Iceland’s most remote and spectacular landscapes.

The river holds healthy populations of both species, with Arctic char typically averaging 16–18 inches (40–45 cm) and brown trout around 18–20 inches (45–50 cm). But there are much bigger fish around. Browns have been caught up to 30inches (75 cm), while char in the 25–27 inch (63–69 cm) range are caught every season.

The fishing changes as the season progresses. Early in the season, streamers are usually the most effective approach. As we move into June and summer takes hold, dry-fly fishing and nymphing become the main game.

Our Highland Fishing Lodge is open from June through August, giving anglers access to Kaldakvísl and the surrounding Highland waters. Day trips to Kaldakvísl are also possible in May and September, when road, weather and fishing conditions allow.

More than anything, Kaldakvísl is about wild fish in a truly wild place, a river where the fishing and the journey into Iceland’s interior are all part of the experience.

Join us at Battle Hill Lodge in spring 2027 for six days targeting sea-run brown trout in Iceland’s rivers.

Spring brings a different experience from our fall fishing, with much of the fishing focused lower in the river systems, swinging flies with two-handed rods.

Each week is limited to 8 rods and includes:
• 6 days of fishing and 6 nights at the lodge
• Guiding and all meals
• Round-trip transfers between Reykjavík and the lodge
