Today we watched the first Atlantic salmon successfully swim through the new fish pass at Litla Kverka, a tributary of Miðfjarðará in Bakkafjörður. For years, this waterfall prevented salmon from reaching the habitat upstream. Over the past year, our team has worked to build a natural fish pass, opening up new spawning and nursery habitat while preserving the beauty of the river.

Seeing the first salmon find its way upstream was a special and emotional moment for everyone involved. These are the moments that remind us why we do what we do.

The Hafralónsá counter is now up and running! Yesterday, 12 adults were recorded passing the counter, a brilliant start, and we are very excited to begin monitoring this river.

A new era of fish monitoring in Iceland!

Last week, our team successfully installed a new TIVA fish counter in the River Hofsá, the first system of its kind to be installed in an Icelandic river.

The counter uses a guidance fence to direct fish through a narrow passage where four underwater cameras capture video of every fish that passes. Artificial Intelligence identifies the species, and every record is then reviewed by a human to ensure accuracy. The system is already delivering results, with 42 adult Atlantic salmon recorded moving upstream.

Next week, we’ll install a second TIVA counter at Hafralónsá, further expanding our monitoring and conservation efforts.

Before human settlement, much of Iceland was covered by birch forests and willow scrubland. At Six Rivers Iceland, we are working to restore native vegetation and rehabilitate scrubland in our river catchments to improve river health, enhance biodiversity, and support wild Atlantic salmon.

Trees and willows help filter water, reduce river level fluctuations, limit fine sediment, and add natural energy input to the river ecosystem. This increases food for the invertebrates that juvenile salmon depend on.

Since 2017, more than 750,000 trees have been planted, with the goal of reaching 1 million trees planted in total by the end of summer.

Expanding habitat for wild Atlantic salmon.

The amount of habitat available for young salmon directly impacts how many fish a river can sustain. In Iceland, waterfalls often define how far salmon can travel upstream.

By building fish ladders and opening new habitat, we can give salmon access to more spawning and nursery areas. A great example is Selá, where a fish ladder increased accessible river habitat from 8 km to 26 km, helping annual catches grow from around 170 to 1,000 salmon within a couple of generations.

Today, we continue this work by working with the natural rock and carving steps into the existing stone, preserving the natural beauty of our rivers for future generations.

A milestone day at Hafralónsá! 🎉
Yesterday we broke ground on the new fishing lodge, with Jóhannes Sigfússon, chairman of the river association, having the honour of taking the very first spadeful, set against truly beautiful surroundings.

We marked the moment in proper style with a toast of authentic Cuban rum, Havana Club!

Fyrsta skóflustungan var tekin að nýju veiðihúsi sem mun hýsa veiðimenn við Hafralónsá í Þistilfirði frá og með veiðisumrinu 2027. Það var Jóhannes Sigfússon, formaður veiðifélagsins sem tók fyrstu skóflustunguna.

Framkvæmdir við nýtt og glæsilegt 600 fermetra veiðihúsið við Hafralónsá hófust formlega í dag. Húsið verður tekið í noktun fyrir veiðitímabilið 2027 gangi áætlanir eftir.
