A good one to save no matter which tour you're booking: what to wear and pack for a day tour in Iceland.

1. A waterproof outer layer, always, even on a forecast-sunny day.
2. Layers you can add or remove, temperatures shift more than you'd expect between a car park and a viewpoint.
3. A beanie, gloves, sunglasses, lip balm and sunscreen.
4. Proper footwear with grip, several stops have uneven or wet ground.
5. A charging cable or power bank (our coaches have USB charging and wifi on board).
6. A refillable water bottle and easy, low-mess snacks, you can also pick up food along the way.
7. Any medication you might need.

And a lightweight day pack to carry it all in!

First time in Iceland? Here are the mistakes we see most often and how to avoid them.

1. Trying to see too much. Iceland looks compact on a map, but the distances between regions are bigger than they appear; pick one or two areas rather than the whole Ring Road in a week.
2. Not leaving room for the weather. It changes fast, and Reykjavík's forecast doesn't always match what's happening further along your route.
3. Ignoring the season. Summer means nearly 24-hour daylight and Highland access; winter means shorter days but Northern Lights season. Plan around what you actually want to see.
4. Assuming you need to rent a car. You don't; guided tours cover most of the well-known sights without you touching a wheel.
5. Packing for style over function. Layers, waterproofs and proper footwear matter more than they sound like they would.
6. Booking popular experiences too late. The Blue Lagoon and other in-demand spots sell out well ahead of time, especially in peak season.
7. Trusting GPS driving-time estimates. They don't account for single-lane bridges, gravel roads, or the stop you'll want to make for every other waterfall.
8. Over-scheduling every hour. Leave some room to stop somewhere unexpected.
9. Skipping the shower before a swim. Icelandic pool etiquette means a proper, swimsuit-off shower before you get in; it's not optional.
10. Wandering off marked paths. The moss covering the lava fields can take decades to recover from a single footprint.

Before you get into any pool or hot tub in Iceland, you shower first, properly, with soap, and without your swimsuit.

It's not optional, and it catches a lot of first-time visitors out, usually via a very direct word from the nearest lifeguard. Every facility has the steps signposted in the changing rooms, follow them and you're sorted.

One more thing worth packing: if you're heading somewhere mineral-rich like the Blue Lagoon, use the hair conditioner. The silica works wonders on skin, less so on your hair.
