TRAVELLING IN ICELAND on Wednesday 14 or Thursday 15 October? Please pay attention to the weather warnings.
A powerful low-pressure system is expected to bring strong winds, heavy rain and, in parts of the country, blizzard conditions.
Here’s what this could mean for visitors:
✈️ Arriving at Keflavík: Flights may still operate, but delays, diversions and slower baggage handling are possible. Check your airline and the airport directly.
🚗 Driving from Keflavík to Reykjavík: Route 41 is exposed to wind. Be especially cautious with campervans and high-sided rental vehicles. Consider an airport transfer if you’re uncomfortable driving.
🚪 Rental car doors: Strong gusts can force doors backwards and cause expensive damage that your insurance may not cover. Keep a firm grip.
🌧️ South Coast on Wednesday morning: Strong winds and heavy rain could make journeys towards Vík, Seljalandsfoss and surrounding areas hazardous. Don’t rush straight from an overnight flight into difficult conditions.
❄️ Wednesday evening into Thursday morning: Parts of northwest Iceland and the Westfjords are forecast to experience blizzard conditions, including snow, strong winds and poor visibility.
⚠️ Thursday: Conditions may improve, but roads can remain icy, snowy or difficult after the storm. Check your specific route before setting off.

Please don’t feel pressured to follow an itinerary when the conditions say otherwise. A delayed day trip is better than a dangerous one.
