Fish Factory - Creative Centre

Fish Factory - Creative Centre Fish Factory - Creative Centre of Stöðvarfjörður, East Iceland This is an ongoing collaborative and community project. We run a Residency Program.

The Creative Centre of Stöðvarfjörður was established in 2011 when a group of people acquired the abandoned Fish Factory of the village, with the aim of transforming it into a thriving place of creativity, music and craftmanship. Our actions and aims are based on sustainable principles and alternative methods. The Centre is located in Stöðvarfjörður, a remote village in the East fjords of Iceland

. The Residency is multi-disciplinary and open for most creative directions. The purpose of the program is to provide emerging and established artists, creatives, designers and progressive thinkers a port for free expression. We offer access to a range of studios and work facilities, and a place to meet with other creative people in a small collaborative community. For more info send us a line at [email protected]

We are currently building a professional Analog and Digital Recording Studio called Studio Silo in the centre. The studio is designed by John H. Brandt and will be open to all Musicians and Sound Artist. For more info, pictures and videos visit: www.facebook.com/studiosiloinhere

The centre has a large Concert Hall and we frequently throw concerts there with Icelandic and International Musicians. If you are interested in performing in our Hall you can send us a line at [email protected]. Many of our Residency Artist, Interns and Volunteers have performed there during their stay.

Ethan Helow (b. 1997) is a fine art photographer whose work explores the ambiguity of memory through escapism and transformation.

His photographs inhabit a liminal space: quiet and suspended, where the boundaries of reality soften just enough to feel true.

Helow's work has been featured in Aint–Bad, Pamplemousse Magazine, The Flow Trip, and Photo District News. He holds a BFA in Documentary Photography from the Savannah College of Art and Design and will be receiving his MFA in Photography, also through SCAD, at the end of 2026.

Fish Factory provided the perfect space for me to concentrate on wrapping up my thesis project. I went into the experience thinking that I would be a hermit in a remote Icelandic village, but I found myself enjoying life in a way that I forgot was possible. Our small group of artists leaned on one another for creative support and made every moment feel like it was out of a storybook. If you enjoy hiking to a waterfall at midnight, laying on moss that's more comfortable than your own mattress and picking crystals up off the ground, then come to East Iceland.

Nena Zanos is a printmaker and textile artist from the Top End of the Northern Territory, Australia.

My time at the Fish Factory was mostly spent experimenting with different materials and mediums to make collagraph plates. But when the sun did come out, I was busy exposing cyanotypes on paper using seaweed collected from the ‘seawall beach’ at the old fishing jetty.

The unfamiliar beautiful environment, harsh and fragile simultaneously was an endless inspiration and watching the changing cloud formations enfolding the mountains on the other side of the fjord never lost its enchantment. These impressions and the multitude of photographs taken during the residency will provide a solid basis for future works and projects.

Sharing space and time with my fellow residents was a privilege - inspirational and joyous with many memorable moments. To Kris, Lucas and Vid many thanks for going above and beyond.

This professional development was supported by the Northern Territory Government through Arts NT.
