Fish Factory - Creative Centre

Fish Factory - Creative Centre Fish Factory - Creative Centre of Stöðvarfjörður, East Iceland This is an ongoing collaborative and community project. We run a Residency Program.

The Creative Centre of Stöðvarfjörður was established in 2011 when a group of people acquired the abandoned Fish Factory of the village, with the aim of transforming it into a thriving place of creativity, music and craftmanship. Our actions and aims are based on sustainable principles and alternative methods. The Centre is located in Stöðvarfjörður, a remote village in the East fjords of Iceland

. The Residency is multi-disciplinary and open for most creative directions. The purpose of the program is to provide emerging and established artists, creatives, designers and progressive thinkers a port for free expression. We offer access to a range of studios and work facilities, and a place to meet with other creative people in a small collaborative community. For more info send us a line at [email protected]

We are currently building a professional Analog and Digital Recording Studio called Studio Silo in the centre. The studio is designed by John H. Brandt and will be open to all Musicians and Sound Artist. For more info, pictures and videos visit: www.facebook.com/studiosiloinhere

Nora Fuchs is a sculptor from Germany and lives in Berlin and Dortmund. She has been a professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund since 2003. There she teaches in the bachelor’s program in three-dimensional design and in the master’s program in scenography and is active in a network for the improvement of artistic teaching at universities. It is her second stay in the fishfactory in Stödvarfjödur.

“It’s nice to be back. I had the opportunity to try out new ideas, experiment, and find a wonderful setting at the factory to present the results. The first few days felt like spring; there were some glorious, summery days, and in the last few days, winter returned with lots of snow and a yellow severe weather warning—which once again made me reflect on the power of nature and the smallness of humanity.

As a new project, I’ve started recreating my mother’s evening gowns. She had such beautiful dresses, all hanging in her closet, some of them wrapped in cellophane. As a child, I loved sitting in that closet, feeling the texture of the fabrics, the colors, and the sheen, and trying on the dresses. This work is linked to many memories and thoughts of my mother from the 1970s. I also reflected on that time through collages. As a second project, I completed a photo film about the Finnish summer.

It was shown on-site in a cardboard box modeled after an Icelandic house. It was a quiet month—such a beautiful, concentrated, and focused time—that it’s worth returning there and enjoying this place.

THANK YOU to everyone at and around the Fishfactory! Special thanks go to the Knitting Club and Phora, the lady who donated her collection of pins! “

Community Ceramics Course at the Fish Factory 🎏

Our ceramics workshop with Rósa Valtingojer is now underway. Participants have been getting to know the clay through hand-building, shaping their own pieces, and exploring different ways of working with form and decoration.

The workshop continues on April 29, when the pieces will be glazed before the final results are revealed a couple of days later.

This course is supported by Sterkur Stöðvarfjörður.

Leirnámskeið fyrir samfélagið í Sköpunarmiðstöðinni 🎏

Leirnámskeiðið með Rósu Valtingojer er hafið. Þátttakendur hafa verið að kynnast leirnum, prófa handmótun og þróa sína eigin muni með mismunandi aðferðum í formi og skreytingu.

Námskeiðið heldur áfram 29. apríl, þegar hlutirnir verða glerungaðir áður en lokaútkoman kemur í ljós nokkrum dögum síðar.

Námskeiðið er styrkt af Sterkum Stöðvarfirði.

Alli Blakeman is a South Louisiana ceramic artist with a focus in figurative sculpture. Their process integrates the subconscious repurposing of internal dialogue of identity and southern
culture. Their work explores the contrast of humor and horror in response to the narratives within their sculptures.

Their time at Fish Factory was spent drawing inspiration from the peaceful wintery seclusion in eastern Iceland. They spent time exploring the varying landscape with other artists drawing out
thought provoking conversation. While learning about others processes and taking in each other's work. This led to inspiration in creating their own sculptures and further planning for future projects. They explored functional sculpture work and experimented with imagery found within the vast factory space. Even delving into other media such as drawing and learning music.

Lise Borel is French composer and singer living in Paris. She teaches composition at Radio France Professional Children Choir and has written for musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Philippe Jaroussky, El Sistema Orchestra… Her pieces were performed in Notre Dame, Théâtre des Champs Élysées, the Eiffel Tower… Lise also sings her own compostions : she likes to write music that talks to the senses and allows the heart to travel and wonder.

Her time in Fish Factory was very interesting in many dimensions. On an artistic aspect, she got inspired by the astonishing nature surrounding her, the different Islandic traditions and the unique atmosphere of a winter month. Thanks to this long time stay she was able to write many songs, poems and classical pieces. On a human level, meeting the team and the other artists was extremely nourishing and created some wonderful interactions that marked her practice and her heart.

Sköpunarmiðstöðin hefur hlotið formlega viðurkenningu sem fjórða menningarmiðstöð Austurlands.

Viðurkenningin er staðfesting á þeirri markvissu vinnu sem hefur verið unnin frá upphafi og því öfluga samstarfi sem hefur stutt við þróun verkefnisins. Hún undirstrikar mikilvægi menningar í dreifðum byggðum og hlutverki skapandi starfsemi í uppbyggingu samfélaga.

Til hamingju Sköpunarmiðstöðin og Austurland, það verður gaman að fylgjast með áframhaldandi uppbyggingu miðstöðvarinnar hér á Stöðvarfirði.
