Some jobs as a tradition from the past to present remain unchanged and are handed down like prized possessions. These are trades but also lifestyles that take shape in that inland Sicily, which is fascinating and still unknown.

For six generations, the profession of shepherd has been handed down from father to son. It is a job made up of gestures that are repeated on a regular basis and that begin at dawn.

In Sicily, March 19th is a ritual of devotion and sharing.

Altars are adorned with citrus fruits, flowers, and ancient symbols, while tables are filled with traditional soups and sweets like sfince of Saint Joseph.

The true protagonist is bread: hand-shaped and intricately decorated, it tells stories and gestures passed down through generations.

Saint Joseph is community, memory, and hospitality.

Sunday morning in Palermo unfolds among the historic markets and downtown streets, where street food stalls are already in full swing. The day begins with a warm “panino con le panelle” among the monuments, as the air fills with the smoke of “stigghiole” on the grill and the scent of “anellini al forno” ready for lunch.

The walk leads toward Piazza Marina. After a coffee at the counter of a historic local bar, you move through the flea market stalls under the shade of the secular ficus trees. Here, among old ceramics and yellowed books, small treasures from the past emerge, waiting to be rediscovered.

In the puppeteer’s bottega, wood takes shape through skilled hands that carve faces, engrave armor, and weave invisible threads ready to become movement. Each puppet is born through ancient gestures belonging to the art of the Opera dei Pupi, a tradition recognized by UNESCO as an authentic expression of Sicilian identity. Nothing is mass-produced, nothing is improvised: every detail — from the engraved helmet to the shining sword — carries hours of craftsmanship and centuries of memory passed down from generation to generation.

Then the curtain rises in the small theater and Sicily begins to tell its story once again. Threads tighten, armor gleams under the lights, and the epic tales of the paladins come alive in a ritual that unites craftsmanship, storytelling, and belonging. Here, tradition is not a still memory: it is a living art that moves, fights, speaks. It is the voice of the puppeteer, preserving and passing on the deepest soul of Sicily.
