Today marks the anniversary of the day Lo**ta's life was stolen.
In 1970, when she was just 4 years old, Lo**ta was torn away from her family during the largest capture of wild orcas in history. Chased by boats, trapped in nets, and taken from the ocean she called home, she was sold to the Miami Seaquarium for just $6,000.
While her mother and relatives continued swimming through the waters of the Pacific Northwest, Lo**ta spent the next 53 years imprisoned in the world's smallest orca tank. Orcas in nature travel vast distances, dive hundreds of feet beneath the surface, and remain with their families for life. Lo**ta was denied all of that. Instead, she swam endless circles in a barren concrete tank, performed for crowds, and watched the years slip by.
Decade after decade, she waited. She outlived her companions. She never saw her family again 💔 And although plans were finally announced to move her to a seaside sanctuary near her ancestral waters, freedom came too late.
Lo**ta died before she could make it home.
Today, we remember Lo**ta, an orca who was kidnapped from her family as a child and spent more than half a century paying the price. Her story is a heartbreaking reminder that marine parks don't offer animals like Lo**ta a better life. They take away everything that makes life worth living.
