Some thoughts on Learning from others in AdCap4GoodGov
The Romanian lead partner had the pleasure of hosting representatives from local and central public administrations in Germany, Belgium, Latvia, Spain, Italy, and Romania in Bucharest, as part of the Interreg Europe funded project AdCap4GoodGov.
Together, we explored a variety of best practices, focusing on how to learn from each other, the importance of innovation and technology, and the beauty of simple solutions. We discussed how these practices can be adapted to local contexts and the key factors that drive their success, from community engagement to the right use of technology.
We’d like to thank all the participants once again for the great ideas shared, for being open to sharing their experiences, and for listening to others. We’re sure that each of us will take something from this exchange to help solve the challenges our communities face.
Special thanks go to the City of Viechtach and to the Communes of Ciugud and Sadu for generously sharing their success stories, offering valuable insights into the challenges they encountered and the innovative solutions they implemented. We would like to thank, therefore, to the mayors Franz Wittmann, Florin Damian, Valentin-Dumitru-Ioan Ivan, as well as to Mr. Gero Wieschollek and Mr. Mihai Iacob, for their personal involvement in presenting their experiences in the implementation of the good practices.
Each of these communities has applied best practices in unique ways:
• Viechtach: This town shared its experience with revitalizing the city by transforming vacant spaces and involving citizens in the process. They successfully applied the concept of resilience, showing that challenges facing the community can be addressed collectively, not just by the administration. Their example highlights how public participation can breathe new life into urban areas and create a more vibrant community.
• Ciugud: In just 24 years, Ciugud has transformed its local economy, growing from a 15,000 euro income to over 1 million euros. They have also attracted 60 million euros in EU funding. Their achievements span various fields such as education, investment attraction, social assistance, sustainable development and digitalization.
• Sadu: Known for their forward-thinking approach, Sadu is automating many of its processes and procedures, preparing for future challenges through digitalization and the development of the smart village concept. By embracing technology, they are creating a more efficient administration that’s ready for the needs of tomorrow.
Key takeaways from the event include:
• The community and the administration must work together; when solutions are built with input from citizens, like the reuse of commercial spaces in Viechtach or the adoption of digital solutions in Ciugud and Sadu, they are far more successful.
• Challenges can be turned into opportunities for positive change, as shown by all three communities.
• People and technology are two sides of the same solution. Combining both leads to exponentially better outcomes.
• The people working in public administration must embrace change and adapt to new solutions. As one participant said, the day when AI becomes our office colleague is not far off!
• Lastly, learning from others—whether their successes or mistakes—is crucial. As Eleanor Roosevelt said: “Learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.”
