Strange but true: Bari facts 🇮🇹

Every December, millions of children write letters to Santa Claus. Most picture him somewhere cold. A cabin. Snow. The North Pole.

Nobody pictures Bari.

But here’s the thing the real Santa Claus, San Nicola of Myra, has been resting in this city since 1087. In a basilica. In the old town. Five minutes from where you could be staying.

He was a 4th-century bishop from Turkey, famous for leaving secret gifts for strangers in need. Sound familiar? In 1087, sailors from Bari sailed to Myra and brought his relics home. Stolen or rescued — depends who you ask. 🏴‍☠️

Bari built him one of the most beautiful Romanesque basilicas in Italy. Every May, the whole city carries him out to sea by boat to celebrate his arrival.
