Tucked in the hills above Bologna, this castle looks like it wandered here straight from Morocco 🕌
Moorish arches, colorful domes, a mix of styles you really don't expect to find in the Emilia-Romagna countryside.

💊 Behind it all: Count Cesare Mattei, a self-taught nobleman who, after losing his mother to illness, decided he could invent a better cure than modern medicine. He called it "elettromeopatia" — colored granules and mysterious "electric fluids," with a formula he never fully revealed to anyone.

📖 It shouldn't have worked. And yet royal families from across Europe came looking for it, and even Dostoevsky mentioned it in "The Brothers Karamazov"

Mattei built the castle with the same love for mystery: hidden staircases, numbers with secret meanings, nothing left to chance.

He took his exact formula to the grave in 1896, and it's never been solved since 🗝️

Just an hour from Bologna — worth the trip for the story alone.

Right in the heart of Bologna, between Piazza Maggiore and Piazza Nettuno, stands a palace with a story that sounds made up — but isn't 🏰

A few things you might not know:

⚔️ It's called Palazzo Re Enzo because it held King Enzo of Sardinia, son of Emperor Frederick II, captured by the Bolognese in 1249 during the Battle of Fossalta
💰 His father offered a massive ransom to free him — a silver ring large enough to circle the entire walls of Bologna. The Bolognese refused
🕯️ Enzo died there in 1272, after 23 years of imprisonment — though with quite a few "privileges": he was allowed visitors, including women (his will mentions three children born during those years)
🌸 Right next door, legend still tells the story of the "Lazzarina's garden": the executioner's wife would place a flower on her balcony for every sentence carried out

A palace that feels like a gothic fairy tale, but it's all true — and it's right in the heart of Bologna ✨

A few things you might not know:

🌿 Over 200,000 bamboo plants, from 20 different species, some up to 15 meters tall
📐 A 3km star-shaped path, designed to get you lost (really)
🏛️ Only those who find the way reach the center: hidden there is a pyramid with an art museum and the private collection of publisher Franco Maria Ricci, who designed and envisioned the whole thing

But there's more: for Ricci, the maze was a metaphor for life itself. Every dead end is a mistake you have to walk back from, every turn a choice — and the pyramid at the center represents the destination, the point of arrival after the journey 🔺

A place that feels like it's out of a dream, just an hour from Bologna ✨
