Nel 1843 la società ferroviaria Paris-Lyon-Mediterranée iniziò la costruzione di officine per la costruzione e manutenzione di locomotive a vapore sul terreno della necropoli di Alyscamps, nei pressi di Arles. Durante la prima metà del XX secolo il "Parc des Ateliers" fu uno dei principali datori di lavoro in città, impiegando fino a 1800 dipendenti.
Le distruzioni della Seconda guerra mondiale e la progressiva elettrificazione della rete ferroviaria francese segnarono il lento ma costante declino delle officine, la cui dismissione definitiva avvenne nel 1984. Il sito cadde in uno stato di abbandono e degrado per una quindicina d'anni; a partire dagli anni 2000 tornò l'interesse verso queste storiche officine grazie a numerose iniziative culturali e festival artistici, il cui susseguirsi portò alla decisione di riqualificare permanentemente il complesso.
Grazie all'intervento della fondazione LUMA della collezionista svizzera Maja Hoffmann a partire dal 2014 il Parc des Ateliers è diventato sede prestigiosa di mostre ed eventi artistici. L'intervento è stato completato nel 2021 con la costruzione di una moderna torre progettata da Frank Gehry.

In 1843, the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranée railway company began building workshops for the construction and maintenance of steam locomotives on the grounds of the Alyscamps necropolis, near Arles. During the first half of the 20th century, the "Parc des Ateliers" was one of the city's main employers, employing up to 1,800 people.
The destruction of the Second World War and the progressive electrification of the French railway network marked the slow but steady decline of the workshops, which were finally closed in 1984. The site fell into a state of abandonment and decay for about fifteen years. Since the 2000s, interest in these historic workshops has returned thanks to numerous cultural initiatives and artistic festivals, the succession of which led to the decision to permanently redevelop the complex.
Thanks to the LUMA Foundation of Swiss collector Maja Hoffmann, the Parc des Ateliers has become a prestigious venue for art exhibitions and events since 2014. The project was completed in 2021 with the construction of a modern tower designed by Frank Gehry.
