A piece of Brindisi's history is being restored.

The Fontana Tancredi, also known as Fontana Grande, is now in the final phase of its restoration in Brindisi.

The fountain has Roman origins and was restored in 1192 by the Norman King Tancredi, in connection with the wedding of his son Ruggero and the Byzantine princess Irene.

The fountain stood along the ancient Via Appia, one of the important routes connecting Rome with Brindisi. For centuries, travellers and their horses stopped here to drink. The water was renowned for its excellent quality and purity.

According to tradition, Tancredi himself even stopped here to water his horse before his coronation.

Today, more than 800 years later, the stones are being carefully cleaned and restored once again.

Last week, we were lucky enough to get access for a brief time and see the restoration work in progress ❤️

Yesterday evening, we took a sunset boat tour through the waters of Brindisi. It was amazing to see the city from the water and watch the sun slowly go down.

A different way to experience this beautiful city. ❤️🇮🇹

The rocky coastline of Brindisi: shaped over thousands of years by the sea and the erosion of the local limestone, the coastline forms a fascinating pattern of natural rock pools and small inlets. The little pools retain seawater, where salt crystals form and small crabs and other marine life can be found.
