Little Umbrian Cottage

Little Umbrian Cottage This Little Umbrian Cottage has been our holiday home for a decade...It still is - we LOVE the area! This year we are going to let it as a holiday cottage.

This time last year we were looking forward to our trip to Umbria in March... Unfortunately, I'm not sure when we'll next be able to visit which - despite living in South West France - is very frustrating! Easter is a particularly good time of year to go there; the days can be sunny and warm, but not unbearably hot, the cafes and bars are busy. On a spring day, I love to sit by Lake Trasimeno reading and sipping a glass of wine, or to drive through the Val d'Orcia to Bagno Vignoni, which is always even more beautiful than I remember!

Spring is such a beautiful time of year in Umbria... Often sunny and warm, but not too hot to prevent days out exploring the wonderful towns and villages in the area - such as Montepulciano, Cortona, Montalcino, Pienza, Castiglione, Passignano.... Far too many others to mention here!

Our Little Umbrian Cottage is a very special place.... How I wish I could spend this Christmas there! The hilltop towns are decorated with foliage, lights and baubles, not to mention full size nativities... The days are often clear, sunny and cold, the bars and restaurants welcoming, and the artisan shops full of interesting gifts!

A little late, I know, but I've just found some photos on my mobile, which I took in early April, so I want to share them.. The first is just before the start of the "Spring Festival" celebration in our local town Castiglione del Lago... A newish shop which specialises in selling cacti installed an amazing display - identical cacti, all perfectly aligned! The second photo just shows the beautiful sunset over Trasimeno lake...

Today's place to visit: Cortona... Frances Mayes' "Under The Tuscan Sun" novel (and the film of the same name) was set here... About 20 minutes drive from the Little Umbrian Cottage, it is a beautiful, lively town full of independent shops, cafes and bars, narrow and winding alleyways and breathtaking views out over the Val di Chiana. Parking is free if you ark at the bottom of the hill and take the outdoor escalators up to the town at the top... There are always lots of things going on in the town - performances, exhibitions, concerts... However, we like nothing more than to buy an ice-cream from the gelateria near the corner with the main street, and just admire the views... We enjoy browsing the interesting shops, which open up onto two large squares... One of our favourite bars is in this town - a glass of wine or Prosecco early evening usually includes delicious crostini...

Today's place to visit: Montepulciano... The drive (or cycle!) to Montepulciano winds up and up and, again, the views - over the wonderful Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana - are spectacular. It's famous for its Nobile di Montepulciano red wine, and the route to this hilltop town meanders past vineyards and cantinas. The town is full of elegant Renaissance palaces, ancient churches, charming squares and hidden corners.... plus, as you'd expect, a number of interesting shops and many bars and restaurants, where you can try out the wine and watch the world go by... The main street is very, very steep, so it's not a day for high heels!

Today's place to visit: Bagno Vignoni... This is very special, very unusual! It is one of Tuscany's oldest tourist destinations and yet, although I have visited many, many times, I have never seen it busy... I have never seen more than a few other visitors... Never had it's beauty and tranquility spoiled by crowds... Bar Le Terme is a bar, restaurant and hotel, and it's a great place to stop. Slightly out of the village itself, you can dip your feet in the thermal water in the small stone cut waterways as centuries of tired travellers have done... At the heart of the village, instead of a town square, there is a the "Square of Sources" instead, a beautiful sixteenth century pool of warm water... I love to sit there, under the arches, reading my Kindle... It's so very peaceful! Last time we went, there were some unusual, ethereal sculptures, too...

Today's place to visit: Pienza... This beautiful town was originally built as the “perfect” Renaisance town… A Utopia… The first time I visited it I couldn’t believe how pretty it was… Everything seems pristine – plants stand or hang outside the shops you pass as you amble along the main street, browsing in the artisan shops selling jewellery, clothes, footwear, ironwork… It’s famous for Pecorino cheese – which I love – and you can try different varieties in the specialist food shops… Behind the cathedral there’s a walkway and from here you can look out over the Val d’Orcia… I like to wander the little side streets off the main street... There’s a small gelateria somewhere – I can’t always find it, but wandering in Pienza is so pleasant (there's no traffic at all!) that doesn’t matter… Well, not too much!

Our Little Umbrian Cottage is on the border with Tuscany, so we're as likely to spend the day in Tuscany as we are Umbria... The Val d'Orcia is over in Tuscany and it's a very special place... The Tuscan tourist board describe it thus, and we couldn't agree more: "The first image that comes to our mind when we think about Tuscany is its unique landscape. The countryside with its green smooth hills and the soft curves lining the horizon with its isolated cypress trees. Well, believe me Val d’Orcia is way better than any possible image that could come to your mind!"

Today's place to visit: Passignano sul Trasimeno... Passignano is on the opposite side of the lake from Castiglione... We just LOVE it here... It's perfect for a morning coffee, a relaxed lunch overlooking the lake, an ice-cream mid-afternoon, just sitting under the trees looking at the clear water or the ferries going out to the islands....or - glass of wine in hand - watching the sun go down from our favourite bar...
