The Sant'Angelo bridge dates back to 134 A.D. when, at the behest of Hadrian, his mausoleum was connected to the left bank of the Tiber.
In 1935 Clement VII had the statues of Saints Peter and Paul placed at the entrance of the bridge, followed by those of the four evangelists and patriarchs Adam, Noah, Abraham and Moses.
These statues were later removed by Pope Clement IX, who had ten statues representing the angels of the Passion placed in their place, bearing the objects symbolizing the Passion of .
The project is the work of , while the statues were sculpted by pupils of the master. Of the previous statues, only those of and remain.
The Angel with the crown of thorns is the work of Bernini and his son Paolo, but the original was never placed on the bridge but was kept in the church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte, because according to the sculptures were too beautiful to be left exposed to the elements.
On the was placed a copy of the sculptor Paolo Naldini, the inscription on the statue is
"In Aerumna Mea Dum Configitur Spina"
