WHY VISIT CHIETI AND ITS TERRITORY? Chieti is BEAUTIFUL CITY WITH VALUABLE HISTORICAL CENTER.
The town has ancient origins, even the oldest of Rome nearly 500 years. It was founded by Achilles, who decided to call it Teate in honor of his mother, the Nereid Thetis.
Roman Theatre of Chieti have been built in the first century AD, in the heyday of the ancient city. In ancient times the theater had a circular shape, as shown by the left wing of the auditorium in which are preserved some interior corridors, which are the only evidence of how developed the building; the large auditorium measuring over 80 meters in diameter allowing a large number of spectators (about 5,000).
The Roman Temples, dating to the first century AD, were found in the thirties of the twentieth century when some work for the Church of St. Paul. These are three small temples, two with porch, cell and crypt, while the missing third of the porch. This small temple, according to the analysis of masonry, seems to date from the third century, a later period than the other two. The foundation, however, reveal the presence of a building dating from the fourth and fifth centuries BC with sacred function. The premises of the temples are home to an exhibition of coins, inscriptions, sculptural elements and gravestones belonging to the territory of Chieti.
THE CATHEDRAL OF CHIETI is dedicated to St. Justin and located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.
Made in the thirties, it recovers medieval elements still present in the apses and in the contiguous imposing bell tower. Despite numerous amendments made over the years, the Cathedral of Chieti continues to keep the basilica plan with three naves separated by pillars, demonstrating its distant Benedictine ancestry.
THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY of Chieti is a beautiful neoclassical building, born in the last century as a summer residence of a noble family and home to the most beautiful archaeological entire Abruzzo.
MUSEUM HOSTS THE EXTRAORDINARY SCULPTURE OF WARRIOR CAPESTRANO sixth century BC The statue, of up to 2.09 meters high, is a male figure in military costume with arms folded across his chest. The warrior wears a sword hilt and scabbard decorated, and a dagger.
The sculpture is also enhanced by a rigid necklace with pendant and bracelets on her forearms. The warrior probably would represent a body, as suggested by the face mask and the support and you think it was like segnacolo place on the royal tomb. It is one of the most mysterious objects that the past has returned and his epithet is a definition fictitious, since no one really knows who depicts.
