Villa Carlotta sits on the western shore looking across to Bellagio. The 17th-century villa holds an art collection worth the visit on its own, but the gardens are usually what people stay for. From the water, Lake Como looks like a different place. The villas, the gardens, the towns, all built to be seen from this side first, because that's how guests used to arrive.

A private boat tour puts you on that side. Villa Carlotta, Villa del Balbianello, Villa Melzi, the way they were meant to be approached. The boat picks you up at your hotel. The captain knows where to go and when. You stop where you want, for as long as you want.

A Lake Como boat tour is the easiest way to see more of the lake in a day. Here's what to know before you book:

1. You can visit two or three villages in one trip. Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio sit close together near the centre of the lake.

2. The villas look better from the water. Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta were both built to be approached from the lake.

3. You stop where you want. Tie up in a village, walk the streets above the harbour, have lunch by the water.

4.The light is best in the late afternoon, when the lake is quieter.

5. Tours run from two hours to a full day, for up to eight guests.

The story of how Amina came to Lake Como.
Last December, we travelled to Venice to collect her. A classic Venetian limousine boat, built from scratch and finished in mahogany and white leather, designed for the lake from the very beginning.

We saw her for the first time in the lagoon, with St Mark's Campanile in the distance, and brought her north to Lake Como.
She has been with us ever since, taking up to ten guests on private tours along the lake.

Lunch on the lake. The kind that starts with an aperitivo, ends with a coffee somewhere around three, and has no real plan in between. One of the better ways to spend an afternoon on Lake Como. Where would you want a table?

If you find yourself driving up the western shore, stop in Argegno. Stone bridge, a handful of restaurants on the water, and a tiny cable car up to Pigra. Five minutes up, and the view does most of the work.

Honestly, way better than it has any right to be. Would you take the cable car?
