Why Go To Tuscany, Italy

When the film adaptation of Frances Mayes’ “Under the Tuscan Sun” came out in 2003, the idea that Tuscany was indeed a place of romance, chianti wine, olives, aromatic cooking and, of course, sunshine was deeply embedded in our brains. Today, many travelers visit this glorious region in northwest Italy to escape the hustle and bustle of Rome or Milan and instead take in the Italian countryside, it’s architecture and history as well. The Primavera by Botticelli, one of the most admired paintings in the Uffizi

A visit to the Uffizi Gallery cannot be set aside from one of the most celebrated works of the Italian Renaissance: the Primavera, painted by Botticelli.

This painting, one of the most admired and photographed in the museum, catches the attention for the beauty and elegance of the figures represented by Sandro Botticelli in what was his typical manner in the late seventies of the fifteenth century – the period to which the painting is traced Florentine – when the artist tended to represent the figures in an idealized way. For the graceful elegance and solemn gait of the figures, the Primavera by Botticelli is a true icon of the Uffizi, a simulacrum destination of incessant tourist pilgrimages that every day fill what is a great sanctuary of painting.

Saint Sebastian is one of the most popular martyrs of Christianity. Killed during Diocletian’s persecution of Christians in the 3rd century AD, the saint is commonly depicted naked, tied to a tree or post, with his body pierced by so many arrows in every part of his body that he resembles a porcupine.

The fame of Saint Sebastian went hand in hand with the pictorial and sculptural representation of him and many artists have given their personal interpretation to the figure of this soldier of the Church.

In this work, the sculptor Pio Fedi shows the saint in his disarming nakedness, enhanced by the precise rendering of anatomical details such as the protruding ribs and some highlighted neck veins. The young Christian martyr with his head delicately bent on his shoulder, a visible sign of suffering, has an intact, semi-naked and helpless body, modeled with great balance and naturalness.

The plaster sculpture, preserved in the Gallery of Modern Art of Palazzo Pitti, was created by Pio Fedi on the occasion of the exhibition of the works of the young students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence in 1844. The work was well received by critics benevolently and from this moment Pio Fedi began a happy artistic activity that made him famous.

Thanks to his great talent, the artist gave life and shape to the marble group the R**e of Polissena, the only nineteenth-century sculpture located in the Loggia dei Lanzi, next to masterpieces of ancient and Renaissance statuary.

Basilica di San Pietro Apostolo

San Piero a Grado (PI)

According to legend, in 44 AD on this strip of land which was then on the coast, Saint Peter found salvation from a terrible storm. The Basilica is a wonderful example of Romanesque architecture. The Basilica of San Pietro Apostolo, in San Piero a Grado, is a basilica in Pisa. A wonderful example of Romanesque ecclesiastical architecture preceding the Pisan cathedral, the evocative basilica was built near a disappeared river port, called Grado, of the ancient Porto Pisano, where according to tradition Saint Peter landed in 42-44. Its peculiar characteristic is that of having 2 opposing apses and no facade.

One of the most beautiful villages in Italy that conquers everyone with the colors of the houses overlooking the sea and the tradition of underwater Christmas: the statue of the baby Jesus will emerge from the waters transported by divers, with fireworks over the sea as a backdrop

On the occasion of World Philosophy Day, the word goes to St. Augustine: "The way in which the spirit is united with the body cannot be understood by man, and yet in this union man consists."
Augustine of Hippo is considered the greatest Christian philosopher of the first millennium. Bishop of Hippo and Doctor of the Church, he had considerable influence in the history of philosophy. His works "Confessions" and "The City of God" are among the most widely read books of antiquity. It is depicted on a wood panel by Florentine Francesco Botticini housed in the Galleria dell’Accademia along with its twin panel dedicated to the philosopher's mother, Monica. Their origin is unknown, but it is likely that they were the side compartments of the altarpiece with "Saint Monica Enthroned Among Her Sisters," credited to Andrea Verrocchio, now in the church of Santo Spirito in Florence.

"Sant'Agostino", by Francesco Botticini, about 1475 , tempera on wood panel, 171x51 cm, detail.
