May 8 Ascension Day o CRICKET FESTIVAL a tipical florentine holiday that celebrates the arrival of Spring at the parco delle Cascine. The festa del Grillo is one of the most famous folk events that has been celebrated every year on Ascension Day. The origins have drifted with time. although its origins have been lost, there are two traditions that still remain. The first, upholds the belief that the cricket is a symbol of the arrival of spring and that it brings good luck. the second idea is that the cricket was a harmful insect for the countryside and they all had to be diminished.So the festival aimed to reduced the number of this insects and to celebrate spring. During the festival you can enjoy art and crafts, the market of local products and , of course, mechanical crickets being sold!
