📢 Did you know that in Florence you can find Michelangelo, Galileo and Dante all under the same roof?

The Basilica of Santa Croce is the largest Franciscan church in the world and one of Florence’s most fascinating places. Inside, monuments and tombs commemorate some of Italy’s greatest figures, including Michelangelo and Galileo Galilei.

But look down too: the floor is covered with tombstones, a reminder of the Franciscan idea of humility and of the close relationship between life and death.

And there is much more beyond the church itself: from the cloisters and memorials dedicated to the fallen of the First World War to the Pazzi Chapel, linked to one of the most famous conspiracies in Florentine history.

-----

Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the floor of Florence Cathedral? 👀

Under Santa Maria del Fiore you can still find the remains of Santa Reparata, Florence’s ancient cathedral. Among them is this beautiful early Christian mosaic floor, decorated with geometric patterns and a peacock, a symbol of eternity and resurrection.

A piece of ancient Florence hidden just beneath one of its most famous landmarks.
