White rose petals fall from the ceiling of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, recalling the miraculous snowfall of Our Lady of the Snows. 🙏

According to ancient tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in a dream to Pope Liberius and a Roman couple, asking that a church be built in her honor. On the morning of August 5, snow was said to have fallen in Rome—an extraordinary sign in the heat of a Roman summer—marking the place where the basilica should stand.

Each year, the falling petals commemorate that miracle and honor Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Snows.

‘Tis the season for Carciofi alla Romana and fiore di zucca (Roman-style artichokes and zucchini blossoms). Get them while you can. We had these at Ristorante La Vittoria in Rome, close to the Vatican, when we were there a week or so ago. It’s one of our favorite Roman restaurants. We go there at least once per visit.

Finally decided to break out the fancy olive oil. I brought this back from Tili Vini in Umbria a while back. Carted it home in a suitcase but didn’t want to use it because it was too special (sort of like those fancy soaps we buy and never use). Finally it came to the table, and it is fantastic. What are you saving for a special occasion? Break it out today. Every day is special!

My favorite hotel in Roma: Starhotels Michelangelo - Roma . We’ve stayed here three times, in 2018, 2023 and 2026. It never disappoints. Great location. That nighttime view of Saint Peter’s is from right outside the hotel’s front door. Beautiful interior, always clean, super helpful staff, and a great breakfast add-on. We have even had a slim view of the Duomo from our actual hotel room on two of our three visit visits. Amazing.
