Best time to cycle Tuscany
March: Strade Bianche. May: wildflowers. October: harvest. December: empty roads and truffles.
There is no single best time to cycle Tuscany. Every season is different. Here is what each one actually gives you.
March — Dry, cool, white roads after winter. The Strade Bianche sectors around Siena are at their sharpest.
April and May — Tuscany cycling in spring: green hills, wildflowers, quiet roads. The classic choice for a reason.
June — Warming up. Still manageable before midday.
July and August — Hot. Loaded bikes in 35°C heat is a different sport. Not recommended without an early start or an e-bike.
September — Cooling. Harvest light, full trattorias, roads quieting down. One of the best months.
October — Cycling Tuscany in October: harvest colours, wine country at its peak, L'Eroica in Gaiole. Among the quietest and most rewarding months on a bike.
November and December — Cold mornings. Empty roads. Truffles in season. The roads belong to you.
When to go cycling Tuscany depends on what you want from it. The full seasonal breakdown with road conditions and surface data: tuscanybikeroute.com/faq-tuscany-bike-route/

25 years on these roads
My father raced on these roads before I did. I grew up in the saddle here.
This is the cycling Tuscany local knowledge you cannot buy. You earn it over decades.
My father built Tuscany Cycle — a family cycling company Tuscany has known since 2000. I grew up watching him plan routes, argue about which gravel sectors flood in wet weather, and build relationships with the local farmers and winemakers who eventually became our partners.
I started racing competitively on these same roads. Then I started guiding on them.
TBR exists because the knowledge did not stop with one generation.
Being a trusted Tuscany cycling operator does not come from a certification. It comes from knowing the winemaker in Volpaia who lets cyclists fill their water bottles from his tap. Knowing that the road between Asciano and Buonconvento floods after heavy rain. Knowing when not to recommend a route, not just when to recommend it.
Cycling Tuscany since 2000 means we have made every mistake on these roads already. So you do not have to.

Guided vs self-guided
One gives you freedom. The other gives you a safety net. Most people actually want both.
Self-guided cycling holiday Tuscany: you ride when you want, stop when you want. A GPX track on your device, 24/7 phone support, and pre-booked accommodation. Nobody waiting at the top of the climb.
Guided cycling tour Tuscany: a support vehicle follows the group. Mechanicals handled. Someone else makes the call when conditions change. Best for first-timers or groups with mixed ability levels.
Most riders we talk to do not want a group tour. They want Tuscany cycling independence — their own itinerary, their own pace. But they also do not want to figure out where to sleep in Montalcino at 7pm after 80km of gravel.
That is the sweet spot. Self-guided with support built in.
A GPX file, pre-booked accommodation, a van that moves your bags, and a phone number for when things go sideways. This is a supported cycling Tuscany trip that does not feel like a guided tour.

The Tuscany Trail
It is not just a cycling route. It is 550km of the most brutal and beautiful terrain in Europe.
The Tuscany Trail cycling route runs from Marina di Massa on the coast to Orbetello in the south. Unsupported. Off-road. Self-reliant. The race format covers it in under 50 hours. Most tourists should allow 7 to 10 days.
What most people do not know: you do not have to race it. The Tuscany Trail bikepacking route is fully rideable as a touring route. Same roads. Same terrain. Your pace.
Surface breakdown: roughly 70% off-road — gravel fire roads, single track, forest paths. 30% tarmac. Significant climbing in every stage. Not a route for beginners on standard bikes.
What we offer for Tuscany Trail 2026: accommodation at key stopping points along the full route. You plan the ride. We handle where you sleep. Luggage transfers stage to stage so you are not carrying weight across the hard climbs.
This is the Tuscany Trail done properly — focused on the terrain, not the logistics.

Everyone asks. Here is what 25 years on these roads actually tells us.
How difficult is cycling in Tuscany? It depends entirely on where you ride.
Three honest levels:
Rolling hills. The Via Classica through Val d'Orcia and the Crete Senesi. Manageable for most fitness levels. Mixed gravel and tarmac, steady gradients.
Classic climbs. The Chianti. Longer ascents, more elevation. You work for it — but you eat well at the top.
Hard terrain. The Tuscany Trail. 550km with significant off-road sections and serious climbing. Not for beginners on loaded bikes.
For anyone cycling Tuscany hills and worried about fitness: e-bikes solve the problem for 80% of hesitant riders. Same roads. Same views. The only thing that changes is the effort.
Tuscany cycling as a beginner is entirely possible. We have planned routes for riders who had not been on a bike in years. The full breakdown — including elevation data and surface types for each route — is in our FAQ.

A bikepacking trip through Tuscany for a weekend does not need to be complicated. The setup matters more than the gear budget: a framebag that clears your knees, a saddle bag that stays centred on descents, a handlebar roll that does not shift on gravel. This is biketouring without the nonsense. Cycling in Tuscany on a bikepacking trip means planning around cycling routes that link towns with accommodation — not just the prettiest roads. Bikepacking Europe does not get much better than a Tuscan weekend with a sensible packing list and the right gravelbike. We can handle your luggage:

This road has a secret.

Pilgrims walked it for 1,000 years. They walked from city to city across Tuscany. Through vineyards. Over hills. Past old stone farms.

Now cyclists ride it.

The Via Francigena is one of the most beautiful cycling routes in Tuscany. It runs through the Chianti region. It passes through valleys that look painted. It connects Florence to Siena through roads most tourists never see.

No traffic. No crowds. Just you, your bike, and the kind of road that makes you forget to check your phone.

We build cycling holidays in Tuscany around routes like this one. Self guided or fully supported. Road bike or gravel bike. 3 days or 14 days. You choose.

This is what cycling in Tuscany actually looks like when you get off the main road.

👉 Plan your Via Francigena cycling holiday at the link in bio.
