Where to begin with Sicilian wines? The Italian governmental classification of DOCG, DOC, IGT etc is by no means comprehensive, nor an indication of the relative merits of Sicilian wines, however it can give those new to the wines made here a place to start.
The highest tier of the classification is the DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) and only one Sicilian wine makes it to this veritable peak: the Cerasuola di Vittoria.
Even with the governmental stamp of approval, not all Cerasuola is created equal. I would recommend starting by trying one from a well established producers and then branching out further afield. A few worth noting-
