I grew up in the Tuscan countryside. I've traveled to many places, and lived in three countries.

Matera is one of the few places that gives me chills and goosebumps.

There's an Italian word — struggente. It means poignant, something that moves you so deeply it almost hurts. That's Matera.

Churches built inside caves, then abandoned, then turned into shelters for sheep.

Communities so tightly woven into the Sassi -- the caves dug into the stone -- that when the government forced them out into modern apartments, they lost their identity until they found their way back.

These caves have been inhabited for 9,000 years, and when you visit, you feel the weight of all of them.

Nobody expects Puscina Flower Farm to be the highlight of Numenvia’s Val d’Orcia tour—but it is.

The organic flowers are imperfect in unique, beautiful ways. “Arranging flowers” might not sound like much, but you can see how deeply our guests get into it. I don’t use the word “joy” lightly, but that is what Puscina Flower Farm offers.

And then at the end, you sit at the white table under the ancient olive tree and laugh and share a convivial meal.

I smile whenever I think of the flower farm, and our guests remember it long after they’ve gone home.
