Sant'Angelo in Pontano is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Macerata in the Italian region Marche, located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) south of Ancona and about 25 kilometres (16 mi) south of Macerata. It stands in pleasant position with a panoramic view over the adjacent valleys of Ete Morto river and Tenna river.
Going up via di San Nicola, a few dozen meters after the clock tower, on the right, in front of a small clearing, where the climb begins to go up to what was once the circle and the castle, you come across the Teatro Comunale dedicated to Nicola Antonio Angeletti, a Santangiolese patriot of the Risorgimento to whom the main square of the town is also dedicated.
The NA Angeletti theater is one of the 70 historic theaters in our region, and one of the 23 in the province of Macerata.
From the outside it looks like one of the many ancient buildings in the historic center, inside it is a jewel box.
This building was the seat of the Municipality until almost half of the nineteenth century: here the farmers met first, then the gonfaloniere with the elders. There was also the room for the meetings of the municipal council, and this room was already granted and used in the eighteenth century for plays, shows and dances.
In the basement of the building, accessible from below, there was the municipal oven for the “pan venale e casaleno”, which was in operation until beyond the middle of the last century. On the opposite side of the oven, in another basement, there was a pistrino or olive press.
