From 17 October to 15 November 2026, Frantoi Aperti returns for its 29th edition, celebrating one of Umbria’s most treasured traditions: the olive harvest.

Over five weekends, historic olive mills open their doors, local producers share the art of making extra virgin olive oil, and villages across the region come alive with tastings, countryside walks and events celebrating local food and culture.

New for 2026, an Evo&Art route traces the footsteps of St. Francis through Umbria’s DOP olive oil subzones, alongside a motorcycle tour, a trail run and a scenic ride through the olive groves.

It’s an invitation to experience Umbria beyond its postcard views, through its landscapes, traditions and the people who bring them to life.

The endless summer in Italy doesn’t really end in August.

If you’re wondering when to visit Italy, September and October are among the most beautiful months to experience the country.

The summer heat begins to ease, the days are still wonderfully bright, and the crowds of July and August start to disappear. Along the Italian coast, there are still days made for swimming and long lunches outdoors. In the countryside, the landscape begins to change as vineyards enter harvest season and olive groves prepare for the new oil.

But perhaps the best part of travelling to Italy in September and October is the rhythm.

Italy returns from its own summer pause. Shops reopen, families return to their routines, villages become quieter, and restaurants and cafés feel more local again. There is more space to linger, explore and simply enjoy being somewhere.

Italy in autumn is still summer in many ways, just slower, quieter and easier to experience.

Just outside Florence, Tuscany takes an unexpected turn.

ITALY IS NOT A TREND.
And this is what’s currently happening on some of the beautiful trails of the Dolomites.

More and more, the way we travel is being shaped by what we see online: the restaurant everyone is talking about, the viewpoint that has gone viral, the mountain hut everyone suddenly wants to visit for the same famous krapfen.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to experience these places. The problem begins when the experience becomes the destination, when we travel somewhere simply because we saw it on Instagram, rather than because we want to experience the place itself.

A krapfen enjoyed during a long mountain walk, after discovering a little mountain hut along the trail, is part of the magic of being there.

Queuing for hours at the same hut, blocking a mountain path and turning a peaceful landscape into a photo opportunity is something very different.

And perhaps this is a good moment to pause and ask ourselves: are we travelling to experience a place, or simply to recreate what we have already seen online?

Italy has so much more to offer than the places currently trending on social media.

It is the small trattoria where the menu changes with what the local farmer brought that morning. The village where you stop because someone recommended it to you. The mountain trail where you meet more goats than tourists. The family-run w**ery where you spend an afternoon talking about w**e, food and life. The little baita you discover along the way, not because an algorithm sent you there, but because you happened to find it.
