Some highlights from last Sunday's day trip in the Tuscia region 🏛️🐦

As spring turns into summer, this diverse landscape of coastal wetlands and open steppe-like countryside becomes one of the most rewarding destinations for birdwatching around the Eternal City, offering breeding birds, including some of the Mediterranean's most colourful and charismatic species, alongside a rich variety of wildlife. 🦅🌾

Thousands of Yelkouan Shearwaters moving along the coast. 🌊

The Yelkouan Shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan) is a pelagic seabird endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. It breeds on offshore islands and spends most of its life at sea, often approaching coastal waters while foraging. 🐟

The long lines of birds flying low over the sea are part of a behaviour known as rafting and commuting flights, when groups gather and travel between feeding areas and breeding colonies, taking advantage of winds and marine currents with remarkable efficiency. 🐦

This is one of the most fascinating wildlife spectacles that can be observed along the Italian coast during late spring and early summer, and one that we are regularly enjoying with our guests during our and day trips. 🌋🏛️

Italy is not only history, art and great food — it is also home to an extraordinary biodiversity, making it one of Europe’s most rewarding destinations for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike. Discover its wild side with us! 🇮🇹

May is undoubtedly one of the best periods to observe herpetofauna in Southern Europe 🐸

We’re sharing two memories from past field expeditions carried out within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The first was recorded during the filming activities of the documentary project (Arboreal Rodents of the Casalbuono Mountains), while the second comes from field monitoring activities focused on Coypu populations within the park: 📽️🔎

1) A predation event involving a Southern Green Whip Snake (Hierophis viridiflavus carbonarius) feeding on an Italian Slow Worm (Anguis veronensis) 🐍

2) A beautiful Italian Wall Lizard (Podarcis siculus), showing the vivid breeding coloration typical of Cilento populations 🦎

🇬🇧 A few months ago during a wildlife tour in Abruzzo National Park, we experienced one of the most intense encounters of our work in the field: three wolves feeding in the wild.

At first light, while following bird activity along a trail, we located a carcass — and found the wolves already feeding. From a safe and responsible distance, we observed their natural behaviour and the complex social dynamics within the pack, including interactions, competition, and vocal communication.

In species with such a structured social system, access to food is regulated through subtle and direct interactions, especially during high-stakes feeding events.
All observations were conducted ethically, maintaining distance and ensuring minimal disturbance to wildlife

An unforgettable experience shared with our guest from England! 🐺

Urban birding in the Eternal City 🏛️🇮🇹

Our latest outing through Rome once again revealed how surprisingly rich urban biodiversity can be. Between some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, many bird species find refuge among ancient ruins, historic villas, riverbanks, and green urban spaces. 🐦
