Ancient Stabiae, founded between the 7th and 6th centuries BC, was one of the places chosen by the aristocracy and Roman Imperials, who built their large luxury villas in a panoramic position on the edge of Varano hill. After the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, the city was buried under a blanket of lapillus and ash approximately 4 metres deep, alongside Pompeii and Herculaneum. Unlike Pompeii and Herculaneum, however, Stabiae returned to life very soon and became famous for the healing properties of its thermal spring water.
Named for the fresco which decorated the back wall of Triclinium, Villa Arianna is located on the edge of Varano Hill, and is the oldest Villa of ancient Stabiae. It was excavated quickly and completely during the Bourbon Age, between 1757 and 1762.
It’s oldest part of the villa dates back to the early 1st Century BC.
You will visit the different parts of the villa: the atrium, the thermal area, the Triclinium and the peristyle area. You will appreciate the wonderful wall decorations of 3rd and 4th Century style with its refined detail and enjoy a spectacular view of the beautiful Bay of Naples.

Monte Cassino (sometimes written Montecassino) is a rocky hill about 90 kilometers north of Naples (60 ml) and 130 kilometres (81 mi) southeast of Rome, Italy, c. 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the west of the town of Cassino (the Roman Casinum having been on the hill) and 520 m (1,706.04 ft) altitude. St. Benedict of Nursia established his first monastery, the source of the Benedictine Order, here around 529. It was the site of the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944, where the building was destroyed by Allied bombing and rebuilt after the war. The site has been visited many times by the Popes and other senior clergy, including Pope Benedict XVI in May 2009. The monastery is one of the few remaining territorial abbeys within the Catholic Church. Until his resignation was accepted by Pope Francis on 12 June 2013, the Territorial Abbot of Monte Cassino was Pietro Vittorelli.

Running beneath Naples and the surrounding area is an underground geothermal zone called the "Campi Flegrei" ("fiery fields"). This geothermal area runs generally from Mount Vesuvius beneath a wide area including Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples and over to Pozzuoli and the coastal Baia area. Mining and various infrastructure projects during several millennia have formed extensive caves and underground structures in the zone.
