September 1st in the Christian world—linked to the beginning of the Eastern Orthodox church year and initiated in 1989 by Ecumenical Patriarch Demetrios I—is World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, which also marks the start of the Season of Creation lasting until October 4th (the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi).

Sustainable tourism doesn’t necessarily mean giving things up. Sometimes, it simply means enjoying and savoring whatever is in season, right there and then.

In South Tyrol, autumn is the season of . After the harvest, local farmers open the doors of their Stuben (traditional dining rooms) to travelers, guided by one very important rule: only food and drinks produced right around the farm—within a radius of just a few kilometers—can be served.

💧 Closing World Water Week with a best practice from Szeklerland

🌲🇷🇴 In sustainable tourism, strict regulations and innovations are rarely popular at first—yet the long-term results speak for themselves.

At Szeklerland’s iconic volcanic lake, Lake Saint Anne (Szent Anna-tó), visitor management was raised to a new level in 2026, building upon earlier strict measures such as the swimming ban and restricting vehicular traffic inside the crater:

🏛️ New Eco-Center: A modern visitor center has been completed, putting conscious environmental education front and center.

🎟️ Smart Ticketing System: The new day ticket integrates entry to the visitor center with time-limited parking, encouraging a more balanced flow of visitors.

🥾 Sustainable Infrastructure in Mohos: Alongside phasing out mandatory guided group tours, electric protection fencing was added along the boardwalk, safeguarding both the local wildlife and tourists.

Although restrictions and paid entry systems are often criticized, firm site management has already produced clear results over recent years: the lake’s water quality is improving, its ecosystem is regenerating, and the overall visitor experience has reached a higher standard.

The case of Lake Saint Anne is an outstanding example of how consciously managing visitor flows does not work against tourism—it preserves the very natural attraction that makes it worth visiting in the first place.
