🇮🇹 Vi siete mai chiesti come funzionasse la burocrazia in antichità? Noi ci siamo fatti un’idea osservando il caso del Signor. Zampi, facoltoso uomo orvietano che nel XIX secolo chiese i permessi per poter estrarre dalla grotta adiacente alla sua proprietà, un materiale vulcanico importantissimo di cui Orvieto è ricca: la pozzolana.
L’iter burocratico che permise l’inizio degli scavi durò a malapena 5 giorni, come mai questa velocità? C’era qualche favoritismo? Oppure il signor. Zampi conosceva le persone giuste ad Orvieto? Scopriamolo insieme 🧐 ——————
🇬🇧 Have you ever wondered how bureaucracy worked in ancient times? We got an idea by looking into the case of Mr. Zampi, a wealthy man from Orvieto who, in the 19th century, applied for the permits needed to extract a very important volcanic material that Orvieto is rich in: pozzolana.
The bureaucratic process that allowed the excavations to begin took barely five days. How come it was so quick? Was there some favoritism involved? Or did Mr. Zampi know the right people in Orvieto?

🇮🇹Durante il periodo medievale ad Orvieto, una tra le questioni più dibattute era la spazzatura: dove buttarla? Gli abitanti dell’antica Urbs Vetus vennero a capo di un’idea eccellente: gettarla oltre la rupe. Il centro della città, perciò, fu ben presto sgombero dai rifiuti, sorte diversa toccò invece al il perimetro sottostante la rupe, luogo dove man mano vennero ad accumularsi tutti gli scarti gettati dai cittadini. Queste montagne fatiscenti riscontrarono un enorme interesse tra coloro che volevano intrufolarsi ad Orvieto con scopi criminosi, dando loro la possibilità di raggiungere gli allevamenti interni dei piccioni, scalando queste alture repellenti. I poveri volatili venivano allevati per essere mangiati, ma le piccionaie erano anche un losco mezzo per far entrare illegalmente stranieri in città. Come potevano, però, introdursi in città tramite i colombari? Beh, questo venite a scoprirlo direttamente da noi! 🕊️

🇬🇧During the medieval period, one of the most hotly debated issues in Orvieto was rubbish: where should it be thrown? The inhabitants of the ancient Urbs Vetus came up with an excellent solution: simply toss it over the cliff.
As a result, the city centre was soon cleared of waste. The area beneath the cliff, however, met a very different fate, as it gradually became a dumping ground for all the refuse thrown away by the townspeople.
These crumbling piles of rubbish soon attracted the attention of those seeking to sneak into Orvieto for criminal purposes, as they provided a way to reach the pigeon breeding facilities inside the city by climbing these repulsive heights.
The poor birds were raised to be eaten, but the dovecoves also served as a shady way of smuggling outsiders illegally into the city.
But how exactly could they enter the could they enter the city through the dovecoves? Well, that’s something you’ll have to come and discover for yourselves! 🕊️
