From the outside, you might simply walk past it.
A small country church, surrounded by the quiet landscape of Piedmont. Nothing seems to suggest what has been hidden behind its walls for centuries.

Step inside, however, and everything changes.
More than 300 square metres of 15th-century frescoes cover its interior, transforming this intimate space into an extraordinary sequence of stories, symbols and figures.

Look closely and the scenes become increasingly unexpected.
Saints and biblical stories appear alongside fantastic creatures, demons and remarkably vivid representations of medieval ideas of vice, punishment and the afterlife.

It is the kind of place that reminds us why some of Italy's greatest discoveries are not always behind grand façades.

Sometimes, they are hidden behind a door you would never think to open.

In the Langhe, more isn’t always better.
With hundreds of wineries across the territory, it can be tempting to build a journey around one tasting after another.

But the real value often lies in choosing differently.

Two carefully selected producers can tell two completely different stories: perhaps a small family-run estate where generations still work side by side, followed by a winery with another philosophy, scale or approach to the land.

Then, leave the cellar behind.
Head towards Alta Langa, where the familiar vineyard landscape begins to change into forests, hazelnut groves and smaller villages. Stop for a long Piedmontese lunch. Take the roads that weren’t chosen simply because they were the fastest.

The Langhe have much more to offer than a collection of famous labels.
Sometimes, the best itinerary is not the one with the most reservations.
It’s the one where every stop has a reason to be there.

Lunch is never just lunch in the Langhe. Here, sitting around a table is part of the way the territory is experienced.

A few local dishes, a bottle opened slowly, conversations that last longer than expected and, just beyond the table, hills covered in vineyards. Piedmontese cuisine was shaped by this land and its seasons, which is why eating here feels so closely connected to where you are.

And perhaps that’s the detail worth remembering about the Langhe. You don’t always need another place to visit. Sometimes, you simply need a table worth staying at.

Trifulau.
In Piedmont, this is the name given to the truffle hunter.

But being a trifulau means much more than searching for truffles.
It means knowing the woods. Understanding the soil, the seasons and the smallest signs of a landscape that, to an unfamiliar eye, reveals almost nothing.
Traditionally, the trifulau walks through the countryside accompanied by a tabui, the local name for the truffle dog, searching for what grows hidden beneath the earth.

In the Langhe, this knowledge has been passed down through generations, long before the White Truffle of Alba became internationally celebrated.

The tradition gained wider recognition in 1929, when Alba hosted the first edition of what would eventually become the International Alba White Truffle Fair.
Almost a century later, every autumn the truffle still brings people from around the world to these hills.

Yet for the trifulau, everything still begins in the same way: in the woods, with a dog, patience and knowledge of the land.

Everyone recommends Salento. Few know how to design it.
Planning a trip to Salento may seem straightforward.
A few nights by the sea.
A visit to Lecce.
Some time in Otranto.
A beautiful masseria.

Some of the best traditions are born from simple ideas.

The Caffè Leccese is one of them.

In the hot summers of Salento, bar owners began pouring freshly brewed espresso over ice to cool it instantly. Then they added almond milk, an ingredient deeply rooted in the region thanks to centuries of almond cultivation and traditional pastry-making.

The result was something entirely new.
Not an iced coffee.
Not a dessert.

But a drink that perfectly reflects the character of Salento: bold, refreshing and unmistakably local.
Today, ordering a Caffè Leccese is almost a ritual.

Every café has its own balance of espresso, ice and almond milk, but the idea has remained the same for generations.

Sometimes, understanding a place starts with something as simple as the first sip.

Every corner of Italy has its own stories.
In Salento, one of the most beloved is that of the Scazzamurieddhru.

According to local tradition, this little house spirit would appear after dark, playing harmless tricks around the home.

People believed he hid everyday objects, braided horses' manes during the night and filled old houses with mysterious sounds.
He wasn't seen as an evil creature, but as a mischievous presence.
Some even believed that, if treated with respect, he could reveal hidden treasures or bring a little luck.

For generations, these stories were told by grandparents on warm summer evenings, long before television and smartphones.
They helped explain the unexplained, but above all they kept the imagination alive.

Today, the Scazzamurieddhru remains one of the symbols of Salento's rich folklore a reminder that every place has its own legends, waiting to be discovered.

P.S. The sculpture shown in the third slide represents the Scazzamurieddhru.
In Lecce, where this legendary spirit is also known as Lauro or Uru, a sculpture has been dedicated to him and can still be seen on the first-floor balcony of Palazzo Belli.

According to local tradition, people believed they could keep the spirit away by placing a horseshoe together with the horns of an ox or a ram above the entrance of their home.
