For this Artist in Focus, we chose Emma Dante — one of the most powerful and singular voices to emerge from Palermo in contemporary theatre and film. Born in Palermo in 1967, she built a language of her own: visceral, poetic, physical and deeply rooted in Sicily, yet never reduced to folklore.

Her work often begins with the body, with family bonds, with desire, pain, ritual and survival. On screen, 'The Macaluso Sisters' brought her world to the Venice Film Festival competition in 2020 and later received the Francesco Pasinetti Award for Best Film there; in 2026, Venice also honoured her with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in theatre.

🔎 For this "Artist in Focus", we chose Alberto Burri, an artist who transformed matter into memory.

Born in Città di Castello in 1915, Burri became one of the leading figures of post-war Italian art, known for his radical use of materials such as burlap, wood, iron, plastic and concrete. His work moved beyond painting, turning surfaces, structures and landscapes into places of reflection.

For Sicily, his name is inseparable from the Grande Cretto di Gibellina, a monumental work that covers the ruins of the old town destroyed by the 1968 earthquake, turning absence into form and memory into landscape.
