Admiral's Church
Known as the Martorana, this church located in Piazza Bellini is
in a dominant position and owes its name to the presence of a female Benedictine monastery, founded in 1193.
Its construction (1143-1185) is due to the great Admiral of the Kingdom, George Antiochenes, as thanks for the help and protection granted to him by the Madonna and so he assigned the church to the Byzantine clergy.
Its current appearance is due to the baroque additions, partly eliminated by the restorations carried out by Giuseppe Patricolo (1870-1873), clearly showing the contrast between the baroque facade and the wall surface of the Norman era. Do you want to know its history? your now
