🇮🇹 Il Portale Fierro, situato nelle strette vicinanze della Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, è un altro importante portale storico in pietra del paese. A differenza di altri portali sobri, il Portale Fierro presenta elementi decorativi più elaborati, con dettagli finemente scolpiti che testimoniano l’abilità artigianale dell’epoca. Realizzato in pietra locale, probabilmente apparteneva alla famiglia Fierro, un nome di rilievo nella zona. Il Portale Fierro unisce una struttura funzionale a un’elegante decorazione, contribuendo al fascino unico delle vie storiche di Pignola e offrendo uno spaccato del passato nobile del paese.

Unlike other sober portals, the Portale Fierro features more elaborate decorative elements, with finely carved details that testify to the craftsmanship of the time. Made of local stone, it probably belonged to the Fierro family, a prominent name in the area. The Portale Fierro combines a functional structure with elegant decoration, contributing to the unique charm of the historic streets of Pignola and offering a glimpse of the noble past of the town.

🇮🇹 Nella quarta domenica di maggio, la comunità di Pignola vive uno dei momenti più intensi e toccanti dell’anno: l’intronizzazione della Madonna di Pignola, che chiude la Festa di Maria Santissima degli Angeli.
In questo rito profondamente sentito, la statua della Madonna viene spogliata del suo oro e della sua raggiera, simboli della sua regalità. Così, spoglia di ornamenti ma ricca di significato, si fa vicina al cuore del popolo. Prima di essere posta sul suo trono, sull’altare della Chiesa a lei intitolata, la Madonna viene salutata dai fedeli: un momento di intensa commozione, in cui ogni pignolese sente di poter stringere tra le braccia la propria Madre celeste.
È un gesto semplice ma carico di amore e spiritualità, che unisce generazioni, tradizioni e fede in un unico, grande abbraccio collettivo. Un atto che racconta chi siamo, da dove veniamo e quanto la nostra devozione sia viva, sincera e profonda.

🇬🇧 On the fourth Sunday of May, the community of Pignola experiences one of the most intense and touching moments of the year: the enthronement of the Madonna of Pignola, which closes the Feast of Maria Santissima degli Angeli.
In this deeply felt rite, the statue of the Madonna is stripped of its gold and its halo, symbols of her royalty. Thus, stripped of ornaments but rich in meaning, she comes close to the hearts of the people. Before being placed on her throne, on the altar of the Church named after her, the Madonna is greeted by the faithful: a moment of intense emotion, in which every Pignolese feels they can hold their heavenly Mother in their arms.
It is a simple gesture but full of love and spirituality, which unites generations, traditions and faith in a single, great collective embrace. An act that tells who we are, where we come from and how alive, sincere and profound our devotion is.

🇮🇹 La sera della vigilia della festa di Maria Santissima degli Angeli, Pignola si anima di una tradizione unica: la Processione della Uglia. Un piccolo trono a forma di guglia, con l'immagine della Madonna, viene portato a spalla dai giovani del paese, accompagnato dalla musica della banda. Il cammino è ostacolato da falò di ginestre accesi lungo le vie del centro, simbolo della lotta tra il bene e il male. I portatori, incitati dalla folla e dalla musica, affrontano coraggiosamente le fiamme, rappresentando il superamento delle difficoltà con la protezione della Vergine. Si tratta dunque di un avvenimento che precede la processione canonica e se ne distacca notevolmente, tant'è che i parroci che si sono susseguiti negli anni sono sempre stati assenti durante questo rito.

🇬🇧 On the eve of the feast of Maria Santissima degli Angeli, Pignola comes alive with a unique tradition: the Procession of the Uglia. A small throne in the shape of a spire, with the image of the Madonna, is carried on the shoulders of the young people of the village, accompanied by the music of the band. The path is obstructed by bonfires of brooms lit along the streets of the center, a symbol of the struggle between good and evil. The bearers, encouraged by the crowd and the music, bravely face the flames, representing the overcoming of difficulties with the protection of the Virgin. It is therefore an event that precedes the canonical procession and is significantly different from it, so much so that the parish priests who have followed one another over the years have always been absent during this rite.

🇮🇹 A Pignola, i Sabato che precedono la festa in onore di Maria Santissima degli Angeli, i campi si popolano di mani operose: è tempo di raccogliere le ginestre, simbolo di luce e purificazione, destinate ad alimentare il grande falò votivo per la Uglia.
È una tradizione antica, semplice e profonda. Gruppi di giovani e volontari percorrono le colline intorno al paese per raccogliere questi fiori selvatici dal profumo intenso e dal colore dorato. Le ginestre, intrecciate e accatastate, diventeranno cuore ardente dei falò della Uglia, che la sera della vigilia bruceranno nel centro del paese, illuminando i volti e i cuori della comunità.
Quel fuoco non è solo fiamma: è preghiera, offerta e speranza. Ogni ramo raccolto racconta un gesto d’amore verso la Madonna e verso la terra.
A Pignola, anche la natura si fa fede.

🇬🇧 In Pignola, on the Saturdays preceding the feast in honor of Maria Santissima degli Angeli, the fields are filled with industrious hands: it is time to collect the brooms, a symbol of light and purification, destined to fuel the great votive bonfire for the Uglia.
It is an ancient, simple and profound tradition. Groups of young people and volunteers walk the hills around the town to collect these wild flowers with an intense scent and golden color. The brooms, intertwined and stacked, will become the burning heart of the Uglia bonfires, which on the evening of the vigil will burn in the center of the town, illuminating the faces and hearts of the community.
That fire is not just a flame: it is prayer, offering and hope. Each branch collected tells of a gesture of love towards the Madonna and towards the earth.
In Pignola, even nature becomes faith.

🇮🇹 Il 27 giugno 1965 è una data che brilla nel cuore della nostra comunità: la Madonna di Pignola è stata solennemente incoronata dal Cardinale Enrico Dante, per Decreto del Capitolo Vaticano, e proclamata Protrettrice di Pignola.
Un gesto di profonda devozione che ha unito i cuori di tutti i pignolesi.
La corona, realizzata in oro e frutto della generosità della nostra gente, è stata benedetta da Papa Paolo VI durante un’udienza a San Pietro. Un simbolo di fede, di amore e di appartenenza che ancora oggi ci accompagna, testimoniando il legame profondo tra Pignola e la sua Madonna.
Ogni anno, questo momento viene ricordato con emozione e gratitudine, ancor di più quest'anno, poichè si festeggerà il 60° anniversario, nel segno della tradizione e della spiritualità che rendono unica la nostra comunità.

🇬🇧 June 27, 1965 is a date that shines in the heart of our community: the Madonna of Pignola was solemnly crowned by Cardinal Enrico Dante, by Decree of the Vatican Chapter, and proclaimed Protector of Pignola.
A gesture of deep devotion that united the hearts of all the people of Pignola.
The crown, made of gold and the fruit of the generosity of our people, was blessed by Pope Paul VI during an audience at St. Peter's. A symbol of faith, love and belonging that still accompanies us today, testifying to the deep bond between Pignola and its Madonna.
Every year, this moment is remembered with emotion and gratitude, even more so this year, as we will celebrate the 60th anniversary, in the name of tradition and spirituality that make our community unique.

🇮🇹 A Pignola, la Festa non è solo un evento: è un’atmosfera che si respira, un ricordo che si rinnova, un'emozione che si tramanda.
Da "Pignolerie" del Maestro Acierno, le suggestive parole. Alza la tendina il venditore di noccioline: sulla sua bancarella compaiono torroni, mandorle, sciuscelle e castagne abbrustolite. I palloncini colorati trasformano la baracca in una piccola mongolfiera di allegria. Nelle botteghe si lavora a pieno ritmo: il barbiere sistema gli ultimi dettagli, il sarto corre per consegnare il vestito nuovo, lucido di ferro da stiro, prima che la Banda esca in piazza.
Il primo bambino è già sulla cassa armonica, impaziente, in attesa degli altri. In ogni casa c’è profumo di bucato fresco e di braciole che cuociono lentamente nella pentola nuova. Le giostre girano, i bambini ridono, un raggio di sole rompe le nuvole arrabbiate, come per annunciare che sì, è davvero Festa.
Le luminarie si accendono, le passeggiate si fanno lente e affollate, un panino al prosciutto tra le mani. Poi, un tonfo nel cielo: la musica, i colori, la fede... tutto esplode in un solo istante.
È la magia di Pignola. È la Festa della Madonna degli Angeli.

From "Pignolerie" by Maestro Acierno, the evocative words. The peanut vendor raises the curtain: on his stall appear nougats, almonds, sciuscelle and roasted chestnuts. The colored balloons transform the shack into a small hot air balloon of joy. In the shops, work is in full swing: the barber arranges the last details, the tailor runs to deliver the new suit, shiny from the iron, before the Band goes out into the square.
The first child is already on the soundboard, impatient, waiting for the others. In every house there is the scent of fresh laundry and chops slowly cooking in the new pot. The carousels turn, the children laugh, a ray of sunshine breaks through the angry clouds, as if to announce that yes, it really is a party.
The lights come on, the walks become slow and crowded, a ham sandwich in the hands. Then, a thud in the sky: the music, the colors, the faith... everything explodes in a single instant.
It is the magic of Pignola. It is the Feast of the Madonna degli Angeli.

🇮🇹 A Pignola, la musica non è solo intrattenimento, ma un filo invisibile che unisce generazioni, emozioni e tradizione. Durante i festeggiamenti in onore di Maria Santissima degli Angeli, la presenza della Banda Musicale è una delle espressioni più sentite e coinvolgenti della nostra devozione.
I suoni solenni delle marce, i momenti di raccoglimento e le note festose che invadono le strade del paese accompagnano ogni fase della festa, dalla processione alle celebrazioni religiose e civili. È un rito che si rinnova ogni anno e che parla al cuore di tutti, dai più anziani ai più giovani.
In questo spirito, negli anni passati, si inseriva anche l’iniziativa “Banda in Piazza”, una rassegna musicale che ha valorizzato la tradizione bandistica e che ha ospitato complessi bandistici provenienti da tutta Italia e parti del Mondo. Un'occasione per vivere la musica all’aria aperta, riscoprendo l’orgoglio e la bellezza di una cultura popolare che ha ancora tanto da raccontare.

It is a rite that is renewed every year and that speaks to the heart of everyone, from the oldest to the youngest.
In this spirit, in past years, the initiative “Banda in Piazza” was also included, a musical review that has enhanced the band tradition and has hosted bands from all over Italy and parts of the world. An opportunity to experience music in the open air, rediscovering the pride and beauty of a popular culture that still has so much to tell.

🇮🇹 La statua della Madonna degli Angeli, simbolo di fede e identità per la comunità di Pignola, risale alla fine del XVIII secolo. Già nel 1784, un inventario custodito nell'Archivio di Stato di Potenza ne attesta la presenza in chiesa. Realizzata in legno intagliato, dipinto, stuccato e dorato, la scultura raffigura la Madonna in piedi con le mani giunte, leggermente alzate verso l'alto. La figura è adornata da piccoli angeli oranti, mentre due angeli più grandi sorreggono la corona che cinge il capo della Vergine .
Il 27 giugno 1965, la statua fu solennemente incoronata dal Cardinale Enrico Dante, con la benedizione della corona da parte di Papa Paolo VI. L'evento ha segnato un momento di profonda devozione per la comunità pignolese.

🇮🇹 A Pignola, ogni anno, la terza domenica di maggio segna un momento di profonda devozione popolare: la statua di Maria Santissima degli Angeli viene portata solennemente dal Santuario di Pantano fino al centro del paese, dove viene intronizzata nella Chiesa Madre. Un rito che si rinnova da generazioni, specchio della storia e dell’identità della nostra comunità.
Questa tradizione, che trova le sue radici nella vita contadina e nei cicli della transumanza, ha accompagnato per secoli le stagioni del lavoro e della fede. In passato, la statua rimaneva a Pantano durante l'inverno, quasi a benedire i pascoli di pianura, per poi tornare tra le case del paese in primavera, come auspicio per l’alpeggio e il raccolto.
Fino agli anni ’50, la Madonna rimaneva a Pignola solo per otto giorni, per poi far ritorno al Santuario. Non mancavano i momenti di intensa spiritualità: processioni di rogazione, spesso a piedi nudi, attraversavano il paese tra preghiere e nenie penitenziali. Al termine, la statua veniva intronizzata nella Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore, dove rimaneva fino a settembre.
Oggi come allora, questo rito conserva il suo valore simbolico: è un cammino che unisce il passato al presente, la terra al cielo, il popolo alla sua Madre.

🇬🇧 In Pignola, every year, the third Sunday of May marks a moment of profound popular devotion: the statue of Maria Santissima degli Angeli is solemnly carried from the Sanctuary of Pantano to the center of the town, where it is enthroned in the Mother Church. A rite that has been renewed for generations, a mirror of the history and identity of our community.
This tradition, which finds its roots in peasant life and in the cycles of transhumance, has accompanied the seasons of work and faith for centuries. In the past, the statue remained in Pantano during the winter, almost as if to bless the pastures of the plain, and then returned to the houses of the village in the spring, as a wish for the mountain pasture and the harvest.
Until the 1950s, the Madonna remained in Pignola for only eight days, and then returned to the Sanctuary. There was no shortage of moments of intense spirituality: rogation processions, often barefoot, crossed the village between prayers and penitential chants. At the end, the statue was enthroned in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, where it remained until September.
Today as then, this rite retains its symbolic value: it is a journey that unites the past to the present, the earth to the sky, the people to their Mother.
