There's a corner of Lombardy where the mountains take your breath away and the trails whisper ancient stories. Stone villages frozen in time, alpine lakes that mirror the sky, gorges carved by history itself.

1️⃣ MARMITTE DEI GIGANTI & USCHIONE
Starting from the church of Prosto, 500 m elevation gain. A journey through rocks polished by ancient glaciers and a stone village suspended in silence. Pure magic. 🌿

2️⃣ ACQUAFRAGGIA WATERFALLS & SAVOGNO
From Chiosco Legnone, passing through Sant'Abbondio and the Crotti della Canoa. A gentler alternative to the classic 2000+ step mule track, leading you to one of the most stunning villages in the Alps. In autumn, it's a riot of colour 🍂

3️⃣ LAGO ANGELOGA & RIFUGIO CHIAVENNA
600 m elevation gain to a high alpine lake where the mountains mirror perfectly on the still water. Pink rhododendrons in summer, grazing cows nearby and a welcoming refuge to rest your legs. Pure alpine bliss 🌸

4️⃣ CARDINELLO TRAIL
660 m elevation gain along one of the most spectacular stretches of the Via Spluga. A gorge that has witnessed armies, merchants and travellers for centuries. History and adrenaline in a single trail ⚔️

5️⃣ LAGO NERO FROM MONTESPLUGA
400 m elevation gain to a mirror of water nestled between rock and sky. When the wind stops, the reflection is flawless. Truly breathtaking 🪞

There’s a different side of Lake Como.
Wild, powerful, unexpected.
The Orrido di Bellano is a place where water has been shaping the rock for thousands of years — and you can walk right through it.

And just above the gorge runs the Sentiero del Viandante — an ancient trail that follows the eastern shore of Lake Como, connecting small villages, hidden viewpoints, and quieter corners far from the crowds.
✨ If you’re looking to experience Lake Como beyond the classic villas, this is where the journey begins.

Here’s one of those places that never lose their magic.

Uschione is a small alpine hamlet above Chiavenna, reachable in about an hour on foot from Prosto.
The trail winds through the forest, passing by the “marmitte dei giganti” — natural rock pools carved by glacial water over thousands of years.

But it’s not just about the hike.

It’s about arriving somewhere that feels untouched, quiet, and deeply authentic.
A place where time slows down — and where I always love to come back.

If you’re looking to experience a different side of the Italian Alps, this is one of those hidden gems.

The Via Spluga connects Italy and Switzerland through historic paths,
wild landscapes and small alpine villages.

This is Piuro, the small alpine town where I live in Northern Italy.

Just a few minutes from Chiavenna, this place is full of hidden corners: waterfalls, historic villages and beautiful mountain landscapes.

Many travelers pass here on their way from Lake Como to St. Moritz without realizing how beautiful this valley is.

It's one of my favorite places to guide hikes and share the quieter side of the Alps.
