The Origins

Lake Cedrino is an artificial reservoir created in 1984 through the construction of a dam to facilitate the irrigation of the surrounding fields. This man-made creation has resulted in a natural landscape with a significant ecological impact, making it highly appreciated by tourists and hikers.

Trekking and Fishing

Heritage

The Nuraghe of Barumini is an exceptional example of prehistoric architecture. Dating back to the 16th-13th century BC, this imposing Nuragic complex consists of a central tower and a surrounding village and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

The Village

Around the Nuraghe, during the Iron Age, a Nuragic village developed that included 50 circular-plan huts built with large dry-stone boulders. This settlement was probably the center of a complex social structure that is reflected in the site’s architecture.

The Functions

Su Nuraxi was used as a lookout for the surveillance of cultivated fields and animal herds, and it was likely also part of a complex religious cult and social gathering place. Recent studies indicate that it may have also had an astronomical function, serving as an observation point for celestial objects.

The Basin

Lake Omodeo is the largest artificial lake in Sardinia and is located in the heart of the island. Created by the damming of the Tirso River, it is a place of considerable landscape and environmental importance, rich in flora and fauna typical of the Mediterranean scrub.

The History

It owes its name to engineer Angelo Omodeo, who designed the first dam. Originally created in the 1920s, the lake was the largest artificial basin in Europe for a long time. Its construction was made possible thanks to the Santa Chiara dam and later the Eleonora d’Arborea dam.

Majestic.

The Prenuragic Altar of Monte d’Accoddi is a unique monument in the western Mediterranean and one of the most important testimonies to Sardinia’s prehistoric past. Standing 11 metres high, the structure has a truncated-pyramidal shape and features a long access ramp reminiscent of the Mesopotamian ziggurats.

The Function

Built between the 4th and 3rd millennia BC, it was discovered in the 1950s, revealing a complex layering of ritual practices that took place there over thousands of years. Its pyramidal shape and large summit platform suggest that it may have been used for ceremonies of great importance.

The Origins

Declared a Natural Monument of Sardinia in 1993 and an Italian Natural Monument in 1995, this famous gem of the Gulf of Orosei was formed in 1962 following a landslide that caused rocks from the Supramonte mountains to collapse, triggered by the heavy rainfall that hit Sardinia that year.

Accessible exclusively by sea or via an approximately 8 km round-trip hike starting from the Golgo Plateau in Baunei, this secluded cove is surrounded by 150-metre-high rocky cliffs. Aristanis

Born near the ancient Phoenician-Punic city of Tharros, the name Oristano appears for the first time within ancient 7th-century Byzantine writings.
It is said that the residential core formed around a villa belonging to the Aristius family, who owned many properties in Sardinia.

Heritage

Oristano is a city rich in history and culture, known for being the capital of the Judicate of Arborea. Today, it attracts many tourists thanks to its historical heritage, such as the medieval walls, erected between the 11th and 13th centuries, the Tower of San Cristoforo, and the Antiquarium Arborense, a museum that houses archaeological evidence of the Nuragic civilization.

Traditions

Oristano is also famous for Vernaccia, a prized white DOC w**e produced from indigenous grape varieties. Of great significance is the Sartiglia, a spectacular medieval equestrian joust that is today one of the very few remaining in Europe.
