How to reach the Central Area of Positano from the Port
- walk to Santa Maria Assunta Church
- go uphill along Via dei Mulini
- arrive in Piazza dei Mulini where after a refreshing granita you can catch a local bus or hire a taxi
- due to our steep Mountains, narrow streets and thousands of steps, Google Maps does not work precisely (Trust local indeed)

If you’ve visited Positano, you’ve definitely admired the iconic majolica dome of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. Inside sits the famous Black Madonna icon. Stripping away the local folklore, here is the actual history of this masterpiece:
👇1️⃣ BYZANTINE ORIGINS: This is an authentic Byzantine icon dating back to the 12th century. Painted with tempera and golden leaf on a durable cedar wood panel, it arrived in Positano via the extensive medieval trade routes between the Republic of Amalfi and the Eastern Mediterranean.
2️⃣ WHY IS IT BLACK? The dark skin tone is a chemical and environmental result, not a stylistic choice. Centuries of candle smoke, altar incense, and the natural oxidation of lead-based pigments darkened the artwork over time. 3️⃣ THE MONASTIC ROUTE: Historical records show the icon was brought here by Benedictine monks who founded the local monastery, establishing a cultural link with the Byzantine Empire.

Before getting to this beautiful little town remember to take some information.
has been known as “the vertical town” this is why there are stairs everywhere and some of them are steep!
Just in case you’d like to avoid some of the steps (some does not mean all) there is a small road crossing the town.
