✨ The Chapel of the Sacred Belt ✨
In the heart of the Cathedral of Prato lies this extraordinary treasure: the Chapel of the Holy Girdle. 🌟 Here, through the elegant Renaissance gate crafted by Maso di Bartolomeo, a pupil of Donatello and Michelozzo, you can see the Belt of the Virgin Mary, a precious relic brought to the city by the merchant Michele Dagomari.

🎨 The chapel is covered with magnificent frescoes by Agnolo Gaddi, while the Madonna and Child you see was sculpted by the famous Giovanni Pisano. A place full of art, faith, and history.

The Miracle of the Lily in Prato

Just few steps from Piazza San Marco, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Giglio tells a story of faith, history, and wonder. 🌸

Legend has it that on 26 August 1664, a withered lily, placed before a 15th-century painting of the Madonna and Child on the church's external well, miraculously bloomed again. This remarkable event deeply inspired the local community and transformed the former San Silvestro hospital into a Marian sanctuary. 🙏

The miraculous well remains visible today on Via San Silvestro, while the original painting of the Madonna now graces the church’s main altar.

We are in Piazza del Comune, a corner of Prato where time seems to stand still. Here, you can now pause for a coffee or an aperitif ☕️, breathing in the atmosphere of days gone by.

At the centre, the majestic Palazzo Pretorio 🏛️, with its stone and brick façade, holds treasures of art and ancient stories. Beside it, the statue of Francesco Datini, the merchant who shaped the city’s history, watches over the square. The Duomo of Prato shines in the heart of the city, illuminated by the warm lights of the streetlamps, creating a magical and evocative atmosphere.

In front of this view, the words of Curzio Malaparte come to mind:

"I lean out the window, and, tilting slightly to the side, I see the marble facade of the Duomo, with its white and green stripes, Michelozzo and Donatello's pulpit hanging like a nest on the corner of the facade, and the beautiful bell tower that served as a model for Giotto's bell tower, but is simpler, slenderer, and more genuine: of well-cut stone, of good, smooth stone from Prato." 📜✨ (Those Cursed Tuscans 1956).
