A pink army has made itself at home in Cagliari—and no one wants it to leave.

Just 5 kilometers from the city center, hidden in the heart of Sardinia, lies a breathtaking natural wonder that never fails to surprise first-time visitors. While Cagliari’s residents go about their daily lives, thousands of graceful, feathered guests share the city with them, moving in perfect sync with its rhythm.

This is Europe’s largest urban colony of pink flamingos—a natural sanctuary in the least expected of places.

Since 1993, more than 3,000 flamingos have chosen the Molentargius area as their permanent home. For nearly three decades, the city and these striking birds have lived side by side, creating a rare and beautiful example of urban biodiversity.

Today, these elegant pink neighbors are more than just visitors—they’re part of Cagliari’s soul. Their presence has become a symbol of the city itself, a living reminder that nature can flourish even where you least expect it.

Un esercito rosa si è stabilito a Cagliari e nessuno vuole che se ne vada.

Nel cuore della Sardegna, a soli 5 chilometri dal centro cittadino, si nasconde uno spettacolo naturale che lascia a bocca aperta chiunque lo scopra per la prima volta. Mentre i cagliaritani svolgono le loro attività quotidiane, migliaia di eleganti visitatori piumati vivono la loro vita in perfetta armonia con il ritmo urbano.

Stiamo parlando della più grande colonia urbana di fenicotteri rosa d'Europa. Un vero paradiso naturale che sfida ogni aspettativa su dove dovrebbero vivere questi magnifici uccelli.

Dal 1993, oltre 3.000 fenicotteri hanno scelto l'area Molentargius come loro casa permanente. Quasi trent'anni di convivenza pacifica tra la città e questi straordinari animali, creando un esempio unico di biodiversità urbana.

Questi eleganti vicini di casa rosa sono ormai parte dell'identità di Cagliari, un tesoro naturale che si intreccia perfettamente con la vita cittadina, ricordandoci che la natura può fiorire anche nei luoghi più inaspettati.

Domus de Janas - Sardinia

Domus de janas are prehistoric rock-cut tombs typical of pre-Nuragic Sardinia.

Built in the Neolithic period, these masterpieces of antiquity were made by excavating a trachyte relief.

Archaeologists claim that the first domus de janas were excavated around the middle of the 4th millennium B.C. during the period when the Culture of San Ciriaco (Recent Neolithic 3400-3200) developed on the island.

The Ozieri Culture (Final Neolithic 3200-2800) spread throughout Sardinia (with the exception of most of Gallura). The people of the Ozieri culture were industrious and peaceful, dedicated to agriculture and with a particular religion that had a correspondence in the distant Cyclades islands.

They worshipped the Sun and the Bull, symbols of male strength, the Moon and the Mediterranean Mother, symbols of female fertility. Stylised statuettes of the Mother Goddess have been found in these burial grounds and places of worship.

Domus de Janas - Sardegna

Le domus de janas sono tombe preistoriche scavate nella roccia tipiche della Sardegna prenuragica.

Realizzati in epoca neolitica, questi capolavori dell’antichità sono stati fatti scavando un rilievo di trachite.

Gli archeologi sostengono che le prime domus de janas siano state scavate intorno alla metà del IV millennio a.C. durante il periodo in cui sull’isola si sviluppò la Cultura di San Ciriaco (Neolitico recente 3400-3200). Con la Cultura di Ozieri (Neolitico finale 3200-2800) si diffusero in tutta la Sardegna (ad eccezione di gran parte della Gallura). Le genti di cultura Ozieri erano laboriose e pacifiche, dedite all’agricoltura e con una particolare religione che aveva una corrispondenza nelle lontane isole Cicladi. Adoravano il Sole e il Toro, simboli della forza maschile, la Luna e la Madre Mediterranea, simboli della fertilità femminile. Statuine stilizzate della Dea Madre sono state ritrovate in queste sepolture e nei luoghi di culto.
