There’s something about the Atlantic coast in November.

The crowds are gone.

The light is softer.

And the coastline feels wild again.

From the forests and palaces of Sintra to the cliffs of Cabo da Roca, from quiet fishing villages to the rugged coast of the Alentejo, this is Portugal on foot.

A week of coastal trails, great food, local wine and beautiful places to stay — ending in Sagres, where the land once felt like the edge of the known world.

Most people picture Tuscany as vineyards, cypress trees and rolling hills. But in the northwest corner of the region, it explodes upward into jagged limestone peaks: the Apuan Alps.

This landscape began as an ancient seabed. Millions of years of pressure folded it into mountains, and water carved it into caves, gorges and cliffs. That same rock, squeezed by heat and time deep underground, became the marble Michelangelo used to carve the David.

It's a side of Tuscany most travelers never see, quieter and wilder than the vineyards.

This June, four friends set off on a private journey through the Dolomites.

Four nights in Cortina. Two nights in a mountain refuge. One final night in Treviso.

Hiking through the mountains. Long lunches. Mountain sunsets. Good weather. And plenty of time to enjoy the views.

The itinerary was designed around the four of them, with a mix of walking, good food, beautiful places, and time to explore at their own pace.

This is what a tailor-made journey looks like when it’s built around the people taking it.

Hundreds of thousands of years ago, vast glaciers flowed from the Alps, slowly carving deep valleys into the bedrock. Over time, these immense rivers of ice reshaped the landscape, creating long, narrow basins. As the climate warmed and the glaciers retreated, the basins filled with water, giving rise to the lakes we know today—Como, Garda, Maggiore, Iseo, and Lugano.
Although each lake has its own character, they all share the same geological origin. Their steep mountainsides, remarkable depths, and elongated shapes are the unmistakable signature of glacial erosion. Walking the trails above Lake Como offers more than beautiful views. It is an opportunity to experience a landscape that was sculpted by ice over thousands of years, leaving behind one of Europe's most distinctive lake regions.

Why do the mountains of the Amalfi Coast drop so abruptly into the sea?

Because this landscape was shaped by collision, uplift, and continuous erosion.

The Amalfi Coast is part of the southern Apennines, formed by the convergence of the African and Eurasian plates. Ancient marine sediments were lifted and compressed into limestone mountains.

After uplift, gravity, rain, and the sea began reshaping everything. The steep cliffs we see today are the result of this ongoing breakdown process.

A coastline still in motion, where mountains seem to fall directly into the Mediterranean.

On the trails of the Valle Maira, every rock is a fragment of the ancient Tethys Ocean, a vast sea that disappeared millions of years ago.

Here, you are walking across what was once the ocean floor — now lifted into the Alps — where traces of ancient seabeds have been transformed into stone.

Millions of years of collision between tectonic plates shaped this landscape: sediments became rock, and the seabed became mountains.

Today, the Valle Maira is a quiet valley, but its stones still carry the memory of a vanished ocean.

On the slopes of Mount Etna, lava soils become vineyards — sharp, mineral wines that taste of fire held in glass.
Down in the canyons of Cavagrande del Cassibile, water has carved silence into stone over thousands of years.
Above it all, Noto glows in pale limestone, rebuilt again and again after the earth moved.
Inland, Pantalica Necropolis holds a stillness older than memory.
And along the coast, Vendicari Nature Reserve stretches between wetlands, dunes, and ancient ruins shaped by wind and salt.

Here, even wine feels geological — like time you can drink.
