Responsibility for killing the Bani Odeh family in Tammun in the northern Jordan Valley overnight Saturday rests with the Israel Defense Forces senior command, Israel Police and the Israeli government. Excuses won't help: Without justification, an undercover Border Police unit in the West Bank shot at a car innocently carrying a father, mother and four children on their way home. The soldiers were in no danger, and even if they sensed it, nothing can justify the heavy and indiscriminate gunfire.
The undercover unit entered the village in a car bearing Palestinian license plates as the family was returning from shopping in Nablus ahead of Ramadan. According to eyewitnesses, the troops fired heavily at them. The first to be hit were Othman, 7, who reportedly had special needs and was blind, and Mohammed, 5, followed by their parents, Ali Khaled Bani Odeh, 37, and Waad Othman Bani Odeh, 35. A third child, 11-year-old Khaled, who survived the attack, said that after the shooting, a soldier took him out of the car, beat him and said, "We killed some dogs."
From the perspective of the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu, initiator of the "Decisive Plan," Bezalel Smotrich, reckless Defense Minister Israel Katz and Kahanist National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, the killing is part of a plan aimed at annexing the West Bank and expelling its Palestinian population.
