A magical summer tradition on Lake Como: the Night Regatta in Limonta
If you're on Lake Como this Friday, August 14, there's a beautiful local tradition taking place in Limonta, Oliveto Lario, on the eastern shore of the lake.

The 52nd Festa con Regata Notturna celebrates the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Moletto with an evening procession by boat, a religious celebration, and the traditional blessing of the boats and everyone navigating the lake.
📅 Friday, August 14, 2026
📍 Limonta – Oliveto Lario
🕣 8:30 PM – Boats depart from the Limonta pier and head towards the Sanctuary
⛪ 8:45 PM – Vigil Mass at the Sanctuary of Madonna del Moletto

After the celebration – Traditional blessing of the boats and all those navigating Lake Como
The tradition dates back to 1973, when the first celebration took place with a torchlight procession to the Sanctuary. More than 50 years later, it remains an important moment for the local community and a beautiful example of the traditions that make Lake Como so special.

For visitors, it's also a chance to experience a side of Lake Como that goes beyond the famous villas and villages: a local celebration taking place directly on the water, surrounded by the evening lights of the lake.
📍 Limonta is located between Bellagio and Onno, making it a fascinating stop if you're exploring the eastern shore of Lake Como.

Getting around Lake Como? Here's what every visitor should know.
One of the best things about Lake Como is that you don't need a car to explore it. In fact, the easiest (and most scenic!) way to travel is by boat.
⛴️ Public Ferries
The lake's ferry network connects the main towns, including Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, and Tremezzo.
The central lake is the best-connected area, with boats running frequently throughout the day, especially during the summer.
🚤 Hydrofoil or Regular Ferry?
⚡ Hydrofoil (Aliscafo)
✔️ Faster
✔️ Fewer stops
✔️ Great if you're traveling between Como and Bellagio or Varenna
🌊 Regular Ferry (Battello)
✔️ Slower but more scenic
✔️ Perfect if you want to enjoy the views and take photos along the way
🎟️ Buying Tickets
You can buy tickets at the ferry terminals, but during summer weekends it's a good idea to arrive early, as lines can get long.

A Lake Como icon could soon sail again
One of Lake Como's most iconic historic ships may finally be on its way back.
The legendary Patria, a steamship that has been part of the lake's history for nearly a century, is one step closer to a full restoration after Navigazione Laghi announced that funding has increased from €4.5 million to nearly €8 million.
The restoration project aims to:
✨ Fully restore the historic vessel
🛠️ Preserve its original architectural features and heritage
⚓ Upgrade it to modern safety standards
👥 Return it to service with capacity for around 450 passengers
If everything goes according to plan, a new public tender will be launched this autumn to begin the restoration.
For many locals, the Patria is much more than a boat—it's a symbol of Lake Como's rich history and the golden age of navigation on the lake. Seeing it return to the water would mean bringing an important piece of the lake's heritage back to life.

Is Como really lacking green spaces? It depends on where you look.
A recent discussion has raised the question: Does Como have too few trees?
The answer is more nuanced than you might think.
While Como's historic center is a compact medieval city enclosed by ancient walls—with very limited room for parks or new trees—the city as a whole is surrounded by an extraordinary natural landscape.
Step just outside the old town and you'll find:
🌳 Giardini a Lago, the city's lakeside gardens
🏛️ Villa Olmo Park, one of the most beautiful green spaces on Lake Como
🌿 Tree-lined avenues like Viale Varese and Viale Geno
⛰️ Forested hills rising directly behind the city, creating the unique natural basin known as the Convalle
This close relationship between the city, the lake, and the surrounding mountains is what makes Como so unique. Within just a few minutes, you can walk from a centuries-old piazza to peaceful parks or scenic hiking trails with panoramic views over the lake.
Like any city, there's always room for improvement—especially when it comes to expanding and enhancing public green spaces—but nature has always been one of Como's greatest strengths.
It's one of the reasons so many people fall in love with Lake Como.
