Meet us

John and I were both born and raised in the USA. John is from the upper Midwest and I'm from New Jersey. We met in 2001 while we both were working at a resort in Nelson County, VA. Our first date was hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains. And years after getting married, we are still enjoying our hikes together. Our first trip to Italy was in 2011 for a few weeks. We were immediately bitten by the Italian bug and never looked back. We were enamored by the people of the small villages, the food (of course), the beauty of the land, ancient and historic ruins and culture, the beaches, the mountains, and the list goes on and on. We visited a few more times, made the decision to get my dual citizenship and retire somewhere in Abruzzo. Once I had obtained my dual citizenship, John was able to apply for his through marriage to me. He recently took his oath and is now a citizen. We permanently moved to Italy in the fall of 2017, renting a farmhouse between Atri and Silvi Marina in central Abruzzo. In August of 2018, we purchased our house here in Roccaspinalveti (southern Abruzzo) and we are definitely 'home'.

Both John and I have backgrounds in hospitality and customer service, while working in the US. A few years back, I multi-tasked in a bed & breakfast located in the mountains of Virginia; front desk, setting dining room for meals, freshening rooms and computer work. In recent years, I worked at a visitor center for a whisky distillery. My job encompassed whisky tastings and bar-tending, retail sales as well as tour guide through our whisky museum and distillery. John, being a professional chef for the past 25 years, worked in some renowned restaurants in the Washington, D.C. area. He also was an executive chef at a lovely B&B in a historic town in Virginia. We bring our experience to Casa Serre, providing a comfortable and private place to relax. But mostly, our desire is to share our love for rural Italy and its people with you, during your stay.
