Italy celebrates Ferragosto every August 15th, a festival with its roots in an Ancient Roman festival celebrating the Emperor Augustus. Many Italians will leave the August heat of the cities for the coast or the countryside.

One popular seaside town close to Rome is Nettuno. Just over an hour by train away, with its sandy beaches, medieval streets, and great seafood, it's perfect to get away for a day or an overnight stay.
