One of the most emblematic and beautiful frescoes in the Sistine Chapel is certainly that of the Creation of Adam. An interesting detail concerns the innovation that Michelangelo implemented in representing the figure of God.

In fact, before him, God was almost always depicted in a frontal position, shrouded in clouds and with his hand pointing downward, as if in the act of judging men.

In the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo instead depicts God in profile, with a rather muscular body and a long white beard, similar to the Greek god Jupiter.

But that is not the whole story.

In fact, in 1990, in the journal of the North American Medical Association, Dr. Frank Lynn Meshberger published an article regarding the position of angels in the Creation of Adam.

According to him, the way Michelangelo Buonarroti would have reproduced the angelic intelligences is actually a perfect representation of the human brain.

In short it would be the perfect symbology of how intelligence and creative force, are transmitted from God to man.

Did you know this legend about Piazza Navona and the Fountain of the Four Rivers?

👉Several stories are told about the battle between Borromini and Bernini, of which the one about Piazza Navona is perhaps the most famous. It seems that the commission to build the Fountain of the Four Rivers had originally been awarded to Borromini but Bernini had managed to sn**ch it away with the help of his connections.

Moreover, two statues in the fountain are said to make fun of Borromini’s work (the Church of Sant’Agnese). The Rio de la Plata raises its arm to protect itself from the collapse of the church, while the Nile covers its head with a veil to avoid looking at the ugliness of the building.

However, the fountain was built earlier than the church, so this story isn’t accurate.

But it still remains a nice anecdote to tell when you take a walk around here!😎
